PSE 6 Help

I am fairly new to using PSE and last night tried to venture into using layers. I was attempting to fill a new "fill layer" with new color, and I couldn't get the paint bucket to work. A friend spent alot of time via the internet attempting to help me figure out what I was doing wrong. The only thing we could come up with was that her paint bucket settings were different than mine. I changed the ones it would allow me to match hers with the exception of one. Her setting for "fill" said foreground, whereas mine said "pattern". She said that hers had a drop down box that allowed her to change this, mine doesn't. How can I get this to work right? TIA for any help!

Corinne,
You can Fill with the Fill function (Edit>Fill), the Paint Bucket (press K on the keyboard, or choose Paint Bucket Tool from the toolbar), or create a Fill layer (Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color). It seems like you are discussing several different things at the same time, as you mention Fill, Paint Bucket, and Fill Layer, and all of these are different things.

Are you creating a new layer and trying to fill it with a color? Are you creating a Fill Layer and then trying to use the Fill function to change the color?

If you are indeed using the Paint Bucket, your Options bar with the tool selected will show you options for the tool. The first in the row (reading left to right) is Fill, and in the drop list is Foreground and Pattern. You can change the selection in the drop list by clicking the down arrow between the two words "Pattern" (one in the drop list, and one as a label for the next list; see the upload).

However, this is not likely the only problem. Depending on how you are creating the layer you may not be able to fill. There may be an active selection, and other things can get in the way -- all logical once you know the way they work.

See if you can fill with the following steps:

1. Create a new layer by choosing Layer>New>Layer (don't take a shortcut, or do this another way). Do not change the defaults for the New Layer dialog.

2. Choose the PaintBucket tool (press K) and set the options as follows: Fill: Foreground; Mode: Normal; Opacity: 100%; Tolerance: 255; uncheck all the boxes (there should be three).

3. Click on the image with the tool.

This should fill over everything in the image. Please be sure your foreground is not the same as the background of the image you have open -- that is, if you open a new image with a white background, be sure the foreground color is not white -- or when it fills you won't see it ;-)

let me know if that works for you. If not i'll need to see some screen shots and I'll request them then.

OK?

  Hi Richard,
Thanks for the response to my question. I apologize for not explaining this better. What I was doing was:

1. New Fill Layer>Solid Color>
2. I would click "ok" when the pop up
box opened.
3. The next pop up box was pick color,
which I would choose, then click ok.
4. Then I would click the "paint
bucket tool" on the left side bar
and click the image. Nothing would
happen.

Now, my options bar (top of editor page)
from left to right is:
Pattern, Mode, Opacity, Tolerance
and the 3 boxes (anti-alias,
contiguous, and all layers)

I can only check or uncheck the "pattern" tab.

Now with that said, I did try your steps 1,2,3(without doing anything to the "pattern" but making all the other changes you said to) and it did work for me.

I then went back and retried it the way I was trying originally, and it also worked. I'm not sure why it didn't work for me the first time.

Thanks so much for your time and help, I do appreciate it :)
