  Hi Aja,

Personally, I prefer a three strobe Novotron system. I angle two more powerful strobes in from the front, and, if using a backdrop, I place the third behind the backdrop and angle it down to accent hair. I bounce the main flashes off umbrellas to soften the burst. If using the third flash, I use a softbox on it.

Have fun and keep shooting,
Mark H.

PS, don't forget a flash meter.

Actually, for about the trillionth time, many of the therads here on lighting, softboxes and monlights are quite recent. Look again, check the dates. Before you go out and buy a single light bulb, you really ought to have two things: A business plan and (you guessed it) insurance policies.

  Hi Aja and Marks,
Clearly if you want to start a business, if your goals are about money, then you should have a plan, licenses and insurance. But if you want to use strobes to make images you need strobes. I think most people have an easier time if they start with one light and learn how to use it (check out this link www.siskinphoto.com/magazine3a.html) then add additional lights as they develop an understanding of the way light works. My experience is that a newcomer to lighting will feel they need to use every light on every shot, maybe not a good idea. Also if you do want to be a business remember that it will take you some time to achieve some expertise in your new endeavor. Most of my students get lights from Alien Bee or Calumet. Your first light should have at least 600 watt-seconds. Many will disagree with me on the last recommendation.
Thanks, John Siskin

Don't forget the beauty of natural light. If you have a lens with a wide aperture (I'm currently using the inexpensive 50mm f1.8, I would eventually like to get the 85mm f1.8) you can take amazing indoor portraits with a reflector. Just think of those windows as huge softboxes ... they filter light and can create some pretty amazing catch lights!

I have a bounce flash which I just recently got off camera (wirelessly). It sure is nice to have when I don't have enough light to work with. I also enjoy it when I want to have natural light coming from behind and need the flash to balance the foreground and background. I love that the color temperture works pretty well with natural light. I'll get an umbrella and slowly build up. But I want to master each piece one step at a time. I used to have a "studio" light set that was continuous. But I sold it several months ago.

Anyhoo, we all have our different styles and preferences. I'm not a fan of using muslin or paper backgrounds. I like to move around the house and get pictures in hallways, play rooms, etc. If I had to set up a background stand, lights, and a reflector I wouldn't be able to get the variety of backgrounds that I currently get. (plus I'm not a fan of carrying around a ton of equipment). Just remember that one solution does not fit all.
