Photography Question

Has Photography lost its shine

I find it has somewhat for me. Before when people found out that I was a photographer they wanted to see my pictures, talk about them and maybe even set up a shoot of them or things that they wanted to be captured. They enjoyed how I saw things diferently through my lens, telling a story so to say. Then digital came along and people got sucked in because of the easy shoot and view. Everyone and their uncle all of a sudden had a camera and became a photographer.

I still like to shoot, but if its just going to end up on another hard drive its harder for me to pull the camera out of the bag. I guess I might be burnt out on photography.

Paul, pardon my post if this seems out of line, but you sure sound like someone else who graced BP last year. He too would come up with pointless comments and questions probably in an effort to spark debates… [cough] Derek. I have to wonder just what your agenda is here?

I'm always somewhat suspicious of posters here who do not post images and disable means to make contact such as you have done.

On one post you ask about how to make money for equipment, which would indicate that you are something of a novice and here you suggest you are burnt out.

Just trying to figure out where you are heading with this.

Ray

I have been shooting for along time, just not able to afford the better equipment. Someone hit a nerve with me last week when I said that photography was my hobby and someone said "with all the cameras out there, who isn't a photographer". Sorry, I just had to vent I guess. I don't see how my mood swings, as you like to call them would spark a debate.

By the way I posted my eclipse picture last week. I'm not sure if I want to pay to put up my photos in a gallery.

  let's see...Sam S. calling someone evasive...

Paul, as I have said in other ways on these forums, I wouldn't watch other people if photography is a genuine interest and worry about what they are doing. I don't know that what other people are doing is an excuse to use for yourself and your lack of interest in shooting. A way to feed that interest is to get out and shoot what you enjoy and what brought you to these forums. What things are interesting to you? What do you want to see? Of course this is not the same if photography is your livelihood and you already shoot every day...But if it is fun and a hobby there is so much to explore!

If you are looking for new equipment at a low price and have a digital SLR, look into getting an adapter for M42 lenses and explore some inexpensive purchases of new lenses and accessories on ebay. Several of my favorite lenses were had for less than $100, and I got a few sets of extension tubes and a bellows in the process...When I do still life shots, my favorite lenses remain the vintage types that seem to have more character. new toys can spark an interest.

"with all the cameras out there, who isn't a photographer".

This is very easy to remedy Paul; especially if you want to be noted and observed as a "real photographer"

Go out and buy a 600mm prime...oh; and don't forget to put the lens hood on so it looks even bigger.

Now you're a real photographer!

My apologies to all the rest..I could not resist! LMAO

and if someone got 6 cameras and say 20 lenses and he is not doing photography for living just for fun and hobby, is he still a real photographer? or say at least is he a photographer?

Paul...newer,bigger,better equipment doesn't necessarily make someone a better photographer..you should know that. When you view someone's photo's on this site, sometimes an amazing shot, capture etc..has been shot with an inexpensive, non slr camera etc..maybe you Do need to take a break, maybe just shooting something much different then your use to..find a different niche..start by looking in the fridge!! take it from there...Gail

Wow, Pete. You slammed me in my thread while pampering the lady in another (only 5 minutes apart) for basically the same problem. She is spinning in the mud and I am having digital disfunction. Thanks for showing your true colors.

Well let's have a look at this (you) Paul.
Here are my true colors concerning you and your inane post:

1) I am VERY hesitant to answer anyone with a "member since 2/08" You are a hit & run artist..seen this many times.

2) You have no gallery. You say yourself how others "...enjoyed how I saw things diferently through my lens.."
Where are these marvelous photos Paul for all of us to enjoy?

You sir are a lurker..a trouble maker..Your question was designed to create derision. I have seen your type many times. You happen on a website and feel a need to be heard. My response was all that was warranted given the nature of your question.

I am not the only one who feels this way about people like you Paul..or whatever your name is; I am the one with the guts to finally say it.
It seems BP is like a summer day, with the infrequent thunderstorm of inane questions totally NOT related to photography! We're all good for a while and BAM..a slurry of NEW posts from people we never hear from again.

Let's see?..Pampering the other lady. Hmmm? She's been a member for some time, she has contributed to many threads, she asked a sincere genuine question about her PHOTOGRAPHY!
You are just complaining how no one recognizes you as a real photographer.
Boo-Hoo & Wahhhh

Paul, you remind me of a child craving attention, so you stomp your feet and cry foul that no one recognizes you as a real photographer. Guess what Paul? You are NOT a real photographer. You are a baby seeking justification for your inability to defend yourself amoungst your peers.

It is most apparent you require a sense of belonging to the photographic community, the confidence you have in your photos just don't cut it.

"I still like to shoot, but if its just going to end up on another hard drive its harder for me to pull the camera out of the bag. I guess I might be burnt out on photography."

On your hard drive? Wow paul...Most people here post their work, good or bad for all to see. That sir is the mark of an artist, a person who seeks a creative outlet without fear that someone may not like their work.

Might be a good idea you have to pack it in Paul. You are burned out..On what I have no idea.
I think you should put up your camera..You obviously suffer from "camera envy." More specifically "Photographer envy."

Since you are burned out, how about joining a group that may be more to your liking..Perhaps "Let's stir 'em all up because I'm bored."

You just don't get it Paul do you?

Ok Paul..flame away..I am most certainly done with this thread.

"Wow, Pete. You slammed me in my thread while pampering the lady in another (only 5 minutes apart) for basically the same problem."

Not even in the same hemisphere with the same problem Paul!

It only takes me 1 minute to recognize a spoiled little brat craving attention and seeking to disrupt..The 5 min delay was due to my typing speed.

My apologies to the genuine contributors to the BP board..Jerks like this need to have THEIR true colors exposed.

Pete

So far I have witnessed a ton of jerks here. I have been on a photography site for many years(opensourcephoto.net) and no one talks like the people do here and if they do they are out. This place is a kindergarten with no professionalism.
Sorry to the few who are and they know the sort.

  Paul,
Thought I was trying to be helpful there...Simply, if you follow what your interests are, you'll likely make it more interesting. I find a new piece of equipment to experiment with may have me seeing things differently (all this stuff about equipment making the photographer...that was not the intent at all). It may not work for everyone.

I don't know that it matters if you consider other people or even yourself a photographer. How you measure that may be independent of reality. When I went to writing school many people who had never written a darned thing called themselves writers because they thought they liked the idea. When I worked in kitchens, lots of people called themselves chefs, and, well, some of them were OK with a ladle and could scream and yell impressively, but I'd not be so impressed with their creativity or food.

Some times if an interest is waning a change in what you are doing helps. Sometimes simply putting it aside for a rest does. Sometimes you need a rest from everything. Sometimes you need to force yourself to get through it...Sometimes a combination of things. People romanticize 'writer's block' when all it seems to be is a lack of confidence or interest. The cure for the writer is getting back the interest again. That may require looking back on what helped you develop an interest in the first place.

Richard Lynch

If you are so happy there, What are you doing here? Looks to me that you just want to create turbulence: first want new equipment fast and easy, then something about a gay couple suing a photographer and now against all new photographer -me included-.

too much of a good thing is... well, too much. It's like eating caviar. You see the rich eat it, so when it's free at a wedding you grab lots of it on your crackers. Then, you end up having a stomach ache. Same with pizza.

With film, people spent lots of $ on photos, so they didnt take 300 pics per day. Now uncle moe who lives in the basement snaps everything under the sun. He keeps 25 good pics, rest are deleted. No need for pro photogs as if you have 1/5 good photos no one cares as no money is spent.
