any book by Scott Kelby is a godsend for sure. But, there are tons of free info right on the net.

PSE does not have layer masks per sey, but you can download free plugins.
Shutterfreaks.com has layer masks for all versions of elements, and some cool frame borders too for websized images.

Go to about.com and check out all the free stuff for elements too.

Do a search online for PS tutorials, and many if not most can apply to elements, since there are only a few things that we can not do.

There is also a smartcurve plug in to be had.

here are some other sites to visit:
www.blog.hummiesworld.com
www.photoshopessentials.com
www.photoshoptechniques.com
http://www.layersmagazine.com/category/tutorials/

these will get you started....there are so many more sites to learn more on, so download the layermask plug in, and then read some tuts on how to do it, and it's all free.

I saw the question and was going to recommend Scott Kelby and a few things, but I see that it is all covered. Have fun with PSE5.
