Pricing and licensing?

I sold an image to a company for use on their website front page. I just emailed them a 72 dpi file for $25.00 for the one time use. Now that their company is growing they want to use the image on their flyers, business cards etc. They asked me about getting exclusive rights for the image. I have never sold anything other then prints and have no clue how much to charge them. What is the going rate for a file big enough for them to use for printing, and how much more should I charge for an exclusive ?

Jill, you may want to check out a stock website like Shutterpoint:

http://www.shutterpoint.com/

You upload large files and can price them yourself. It's a royalty free site.

Some clients will pay for part time use, or sell to multiple users, sell copyright which of course usally sells for higher price. How much do they stand to make? and how much is it worth to them?
I shot a portrait for a new computer business which generated 100k in the first year and all I got was a discount on getting my computer looked at, and he really was'nt that good at it. Regardless, you have beautiful work, with a little research on how to sell your images, you should get your worth.
Good Luck
David

Shutterpoint is a joke and a slap in the face to professional photographers. My good gracious, $.25 a download.

OK, exclusive rights to a photo for their main website and a bunch of print material. You're probably looking at around $15k, maybe more.

Fotoquote will give you a good idea of what you should charge. It's pretty accurate for industry standards. It wont be cheap for this company, and it shouldn't be. They are asking for EXCLUSIVE rights to your photos forever, and the access to do whatever they want. I probably wouldn't sell that at any price. I'd be more willing to sell a 2 year limited rights use license. After 2 years, you can renegotiate with them on the fees.

Oh, I forgot, for the license use, you'll have to find out the run rate of their brochures and the distribution. Find out all you can, plug it inot fotoquote, and see what it says. I'll be surprised if it's less than say around $9k.

Thanks Jerry for the info...I ended up giving them a 1 year limited rights use contract. They are a very small company, just the guy and his wife, so we will renegotiate next year and see where they are headed...I appreciate you taking your time to answer my question.

So Jill, to paraphrase Tevia in Fiddler on the Roof: "If they have a bad year, why should you suffer?". Get your fees up front, not in a year. If they didn't budget sufficient funds for marketing, you shouldn't have to swing for a year for nothing.

  Hi Mark,
You misunderstood...I have already been paid for 1 years use of my image. I also got a free Barn light out of the deal worth $159.00 :-)After the first year they will renew their contract. I ended up letting them use the image for their advertising etc for 1 year.

Shutterpoint is different than Shutterstock.....Shutterstock is the microstock site for .25 a download, Shutterpoint allows you to set any price for your photographs and they take a small percentage.

  Hi Leslie,
This whole thread has nothing to do with either of those sites...I was asking for help on figuring out what to charge for use of my photo by a company that wanted to use it for their logo....it has absolutely nothing to do with stock photography...Too bad we can't close a thread when the question has been answered...
My thanks to those folks who shared their knowledge when I needed the input. It is now 2 months after the fact and a done deal so nobody else needs to add anything to the discussion :-)Thanks :-)

I know that Jill, the guy spewed about Shutterpoint when he did not know anything about it! Thought his misconception should be corrected.

You can click the button at the bottom of the page that makes sure you are not pinged anymore when someone answers the question or comments again.... erase little green check in the box just above submit.

Have a nice day.

Leslie
