I was reading in Rangefinder

about the big buzz at flikr right now and how amatuers are taking it to the next level. I don't want to scatter myself, has anyone here had any experience with it. Pros and cons
Much appreciated

  Had experience with Flikr?
All I know is people there are forever "taking" other people's pics and posting them in their own galleries and calling them their own. That's theft.
I won't step foot there.

So I guess the amatuers aren't taking it to the next level, but from it. Do you think Rangefinder knows about it?
Have their been any lawsuits from it?

I'm on flickr and I like it very much. However, I do have my stream viewable to Friends and Family only. I only list people as friends if they have family friendly portraits that appear to be of their own creation (everyone has their own style ya know).

I like flickr because I can join groups specific to my interests or gear. I'm in groups like Natural Light Child Photography, Canon 50mm 1.8, and I plan to join the strobist group soon. There are also other fun/silly groups that don't really have much to do with technique but are more like scavenger hunts ... like one dedicated to shooting anything red.

There are people stealing photos off the web and putting them in their own stream, but I don't see a lot of that because I really only see what my friends are creating and what gets posted to the groups I belong to.

I do know of one child portrait photographer (she is marked as one of my friends) that has had her stuff stolen off of her flickr stream and used by businesses in their websites. Her flickr friends recognize her work and contact her when they see that kind of stuff. Obviously, her stream isn't set to Friends and Family only. She copyrighted all of her images and has won a few lawsuits already.

As far as the amatuers go ... some of them do appear to be "taking it to the next level." At least in the child portrait groups I belong to. I've found that many people in many flickr groups are more free about sharing their techniques. And there are some people creating and selling photoshop actions to the masses! A lot of people are running those actions without knowing much about levels or layers and coming up with some decent stuff. And on top of that, there are a ton of portrait photographers jumping on the blu domain bandwagon and getting afordable and professional looking sites off the recommendations of their flickr friends.

But flickr doesn't replace Betterphoto. It's just different. There aren't classes like what you have here. And things seem to get kind of trendy and clique-ish in some of the child photography groups.

I haven't joined any architectural or landscape groups so I can't really offer anything as to how those groups are.

oh, and by the way, when I said people are using actions to create decent stuff I meant to include that those images that I deam as "decent" are already good looking photos before the photoshopping. I don't believe Photoshop can fix poor photos!!!
