Memory Cards - More or Less ?

Hello,
I shoot with a Canon 5D in RAW. An 8GB memory card has the capacity of about 500 images. Call me paranoid but that seems like a lot of images lost should the card fail at any given time before I back it up on my personal storage device. Would it be better to use more lower capacity cards (2GB) or stick with the higher capacity cards.

There are probably many variations on this theme, but I would like to have the BetterPhoto community's opinion on this.

thanks.

Although current high tech progress supports more reliable memory cards than ever, there have been too many stories about lost or disappearing images from memory cards.
I would not use high capacity memory cards. I carry about 6 2GB CF cards for my camera when I travel.

  Hi Ronald,
I have lost a few images from memory cards over the last few years and I have used rescue programs (I have Lexar & Sandisk rescue programs) that have been able to retieve some of the images. I have learned 2 lessons 1. Dont format the card after you have taken photos on it (I did this accidentally and lost about 50 images after being able to retrieve about 150 of them) & 2. Make sure your camera is powered OFF before inserting/removing a card (this mistake caused the entire card to be corrupted and no longer usable). I am currently using newer 4GB cards with a few older 2GB cards. I am staying away from the 8GB just for the reasons you stated. My copy of the Sandisk rescue program came included with a purchase of a 4GB Extreme IV card.

  Thanks, All.
I'm traveling to Italy in a couple of months and the last thing I need to have happen is a large 8GB memory card fail with a large number of images.
So, I just ordered a number of 2GB cards. Memory is so inexpensive now.

Hi Ronald,

you're in luck: Italy has a lot of broadband. Which means you can upload the contents of your full card(s) (password protected if you want) to a trusted email address back home via www.pando.com, or www.podmailing.com.
You can then erase the card(s) and re-use them. While no thief or dodgy authorities can steal or impound your precious photos, because they're already safely back home!

Say hello to Rome for me.

I don’t know folks, but personally I have never lost a single image due to card failure or any other in camera issue. My work takes me into some fairly remote areas – just yesterday I returned home from 3 weeks in way-northern Canada – and also use the Canon 5D. I carry 2-8MG Sandisk cards and 2- 4GB cards. These cards get a real workout on trips such as this one. However, I back up constantly and make multiple copies at night. Even in remote areas I always manage to find someplace with electricity at least every couple of days. There I load all the images to my laptop and an external palm drive. I also upload all images to a Foci digital safe throughout the day’s shooting. This is a portable device that runs on batteries and holds about 400 RAW images that can easily be downloaded onto a computer once I am back in “civilization”. I’ve considered getting a larger CF card (such as a 16GB), but I read something about how the 5D cannot use more than 12GB. Anyway, this system seems to work fine for my purposes.
