Photography Question

Mundy Hackett

DD - EPP - Where are they?

I have been religously submitting an image a day into the Digital Darkroom category this month, and unless folks are blowing smoke up my trousers a couple of them were pretty darn dramatic and good. And yet not one, not a single EPP? Are they not good enough? Is it because they are primarily filter driven? IS it someething else related to the apparent dramatic, precipitous decline in EPP's contest wide? I regularly get EPP in other categories, so what gives? I don't want to waste my time creating these works for here if they are not good enough. Please help me understand!

Not a darn thing wrong with your work!
Everybody's getting less, and they haven't done any since the 10th. I had only 6 for the whole month of December, so we all go through bad times, I guess. I screamed my head off, so I guess you're entitled to a little question! Your stuff is great!

Hello Mundy, I have a question about a remark you made "I dont want to waste my time if they are not good enough". I really hope you are creating your art for other reasons other than a contest. You have created some very nice art and I hope you are doing this for your own enjoyment and for sharing your work with family, friends, potential customers & other BPers.
I used to enter the contests more frequently and I enjoy looking through the entries but the contest is so big now and many outstanding works are overlooked (there are so many good ones) that I dont bother with it as often as I once did. Relax & keep up the great work. "Badges, we dont need no stinking badges" - John Belushi

Mundy ... this morning I posted the following to BP

February 16, 2007
Dear BetterPhoto Folks …
Allow me to indicate to you my disappointment with the recent changes in the “free” contest. To put it into perspective: I am a novice whose engagement with photography significantly increased when I discovered your web site in April 2007.
I have made it a life goal to become a good photographer. The previous structure of the “free” contest provided a significant learning tool. The new structure has diminished its value to me.
Without becoming overly philosophical or pedantic about it, your contest provided a measure of feedback upon which I hung my efforts. I could see tangible results when one of my photos was awarded an EFP, striving for Finalist. It gave me hope and encouragement that a photography professional saw one of my photos and offered it a small measure of recognition. It says to me that that photo has some merit while those that did not gain recognition did not catch anyone’s eye and probably has less merit. I could study the differences … there is no better learning tool than to get feedback on your work.
I have read the comments that various members have posted. My conclusion is that you have, without notice to the faithful, constrained the “free” contest in an attempt to draw customers to the “paid” contest. These changes are an attempt to increase revenues. I sympathize with that. All of us in business have the goal to increase revenues and decrease expenses. I understand that the free contest has grown significantly over the years … that has increased your expenses … but remember the reason it has grown … your customers LIKE it … they find value in it. Your customers who participate in the “free” contest attach some kind of emotion to the endeavor, strong or weak as the individuals themselves. I believe that you have inadvertently messed with those emotions.
So let me encourage you to reexamine the landscape. I, for one, support your need to increase revenues … that’s not a problem. I think you bring real value. But you’ve got to find a way to do it without messing with emotions … and that means structuring the “free” contest similar to its previous manifestation.
Thanks … Have a Blessed Day … Lee Saunders

Carolyn: Thank you for the compliments.

Carlton: You make an excellent point, I guess what I meant to say more so though is that I am not normally an effects sort of person and it was distracting me from my more traditional nature imagery, but I thought they were cool and I was looking for some validation of this from the professional judges. Otherwise I would go back to doing the straight photography stuff as I do enjoy it more from a pure artistic creativity standpoint. But you make a great point that I do agree with.

Leleand: I will be very interested to see if you get any response from management as they seem to basically avoid interacting with any and all topics of discussion where the sites goals and objectives are questioned.

Hey Mundy!!
I find your work to be outstanding!!!
I just browsed your gallery and am facinated by your work!!! Very well done indeed!!!
I haven't received an EP since the 1st of this month...I thought it was because I'm not doing ENOUGH DDR work....who knows!!!
It's frustrating I know...but keep up the good work!!!

Fabulous work, Mundy! I love what you've done with the Fractalius effect.
In the middle of January, I discovered --and fell in love with-- the Fractalius effect. After most of my daily images during the first half of the month got EP's, I dropped to only 2 during the second half, when I had begun applying the frac. filter to a lot of my images (including many animal captures). I came to a personal conclusion that the judges may have been getting a little sick of that popular filter. (Although I hate to admit it, I was pretty bummed out at the drop in EP's the 2nd half of January.)
This month, I've done well again (up until the tenth, that is). I generally stayed away from frac. One image, an eagle with the frac. filter used in the bg, but categorized under ANIMALS, got an EP. Today, I resubmitted a frac.-fruit still life that was passed over last month.
Keep plugging along, Mundy. Your lovely work shines, with or without the aid of badges!
♥ Blessings, Lisa

Gorgeous work, Mundy! I don't mean this in a bad way but after looking at your gallery I don't feel so bad that I'm not getting EFPs anymore :o). I can't hardly gripe when they're passing up photos like you have.

This site has changed a lot the past few months. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

I have also noticed a significant drop in EFP's lately, but particularly this month.

I visit several galleries every day and have noticed that nobody has recieved a an EFP since the 10th of February, which is the case with me as well.

Not necessarily for myself, but for others especially, I just have to wonder if the judges are maybe behind for some reason or another, becuase there is some FABULOUS work out there.

Hmmmm, I guess we'll find out soon enough. :)

Could it be because now there are two contests to judge?

The judges are not "behind" until the first day of the following month if no finalists and winners have been announced. There is no published schedule for EFPs.

Dennis, I just meant that it was ironic that nobody seems to have seen an EFP since the 10th and normally EFP's pop up pretty much daily. I do realize that there is no schedule for them. :)

Marianne, good question, I guess its a possibility. Do the entries for the cash contest recieve EFP's? Just curious.

The other day, they posted EPs for the 11th. But nothing for the next couple of days. If I were BP, and based on much forum anxiety over EPs, I'd make them visible at the same time finalists are awarded... That way, it's a surprise, no different than it used to be prior to them handing out EPs.

I noticed the decreased numbers of EFP, but I was thinking "this month is short and the have 2 contest to judge". And about the DD, Mundy I hope that the pictures with Fractalius filter in your gallery you didn't post them in DD, because has become so popular that so many people have it and is very dificult to made a picture that stands out, it's not just to applied the filter and post the picture, if you see some past winner you can see the work they did be a winner.
