What make, model, and year of manufacture is that external flash gun? And what camera are you thinking of using it on/with?

I have a Promaster FTD 5200 Electronic flash unit that I used on my Pentax ZX-7 and want to use it on my Pentax *ist DS and Pentax K100D. I don't know what year the flash unit is but I bought it approx. 8 years ago.

Afaik, many of last century's flash guns pull a very high voltage from the camera. If it does that with a delicate modern camera it may fry it! I wouldn't chance it with that "Promaster FTD 5200 Electronic".

Promaster FTD 5200, and any other flash designed to operate in dedicated TTL with electronic AF cameras is completely safe. It's trigger voltage is ~4-5v. It is the older non-dedicated non-TTL auto flashes and studio strobes that one must be careful and test the trigger voltage. If the FTD 5200 has the standard non-TTL module, it can be used with any camera. You just have to coordinate the ISO and aperture settings. If the FTD 5200 has the AF Pentax module enabling TTL flash control, then I think it can be used with the *ist DS which can operate with traditional TTL and Pentax's P-TTL. The K100D cannot use TTL and instead requires a flash that can emulate Pentax's P-TTL system.
