Why ISO will not go above 1/200 Darn Patriots..... Anyway photo business. I own a Nikon D40x. The aperature range on my 55-200mm lens is 3.5 - 5.6. When lens is fully extend to 200mm max aperature is F5.6...that part I understand, however not the case with Shutter speed. Im shooting youth basketball league and need to capture the fast moment. I have my speedlight SB600 mounted on camera the max shutter speed I can use is 1/200. With 400 ISO the picts are dark. If I jump up to ISO 800 pictures are lighter but a lot of noise. However once I remove the flash at the same setter I can move up my shutter speed to 1/4000 if I wanted to..... Why is that? Shooting at faster shutter my picts look great.

When using flash, your camera has a shutter speed that's synchronized with when the flash goes off. Your's is 1/200. Other models have higher sync speeds, but the price is higher. Some flashes allow a camera to have a high speed sync, which will let you use a sync speed higher than normal, but only with a particular flash head. When using a flash with action, the flash is the main thing you use to stop the action. A higher sync speed will cut down on the ghosting you may see with moving things. Especially around the hands or feet. Easier to see if they are wearing white shoes.

Gregory thank you. That helps somewhat. I don't understand how my build in flash is able to work at a higher shutter speed than my SB600 that I used. But what you said is good information.

The SB-600 supports Nikon's Auto FP High Speed Sync mode when it is set on the camera. Unfortunately it's not a feature included on the D40x. Auto FP is on the D80 and higher level Nikon DSLRs.
