Basics on Flash Brightness

Can someone explain the basics to me about flash brightness... when I zoom in on an object/person (ex: 70 mm) my photo is darker than when I zoom out (ex: 18 mm).... this is without having changed any settings (ss, ap, flash). (Equipment: Nikon D70 with Nikon 18-70 mm lens and SB 600 flash.) I know this may be Photography 101 but sometimes I just have to return to the basics when I'm having a brain block!! Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the aperture is not changing? Maximum aperture of the 18-70 changes from f/3.5 at 18mm to f/4.5 at 70mm.

Well, I just grabbed my camera to check, and darn it all if you're not right! I wasn't changing anything, but my CAMERA was! Thanks for pointing that out to me! So, can you give me another 101 lesson on what I need to do to keep the lighting the same. (If I'm in both ss priority and ap priority.)
