blur

I take gymnastic pictures and I have a Canon 30D that I have tried so many things and I still cannot get the blur out of the hands and feet in the action of the photo. I am using a canon zoom lens ef 70-200mm. I have my shutter speed at 1600. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Cindi, are you using a speedlight? Even if you can't get a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the movement, the flash duration is so short it should freeze the motion. Depending on the ambient light you still might have some blur but if you set the shutter to rear curtain sync, the blur will lead up to sharp image of the hand rather than extend beyond the hand which would occur with a front curtain sync.

Bill, it is usually not allowed to use flash at gymnastics...

Alos, are you in the Creative Mode [preferably shutter aperture] or auto or program?

Cindi, I'll repeat what others have said. "...shutter speed at 1600." I believe what you meant is your ISO is set to 1600. This should allow you a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action, but will likely result in high noise in the image. It will help to know what shutter speed you can shoot at a high ISO (but 3200 is too high).

Getting the hands and feet frozen may not be possible with your highest iso. Depending on the event and your timing, you may be able to do it.
Usually in low light you have to settle for the body and face being frozen. Time your shots for things like a jump and splits on the balance beam.
