Photography Question

Samantha L. Dean

Which category?

I'm a newbie who's done a lot of thread reading but am still confused as to which category a photo should be entered into when it has digital manipulation. Manipulation such as effects, borders, added background, colorization, etc....... I've read the rules and am still unsure. I would like to post an example but am unsure how to do that with a photo already in my member center. :-)

The way I always try to look at it is what is the message you are trying to get across? If it's the picture itself that's the focus rather than the digital manipulation, then put it wherever it would go, if the main thing is what you did to it, then put it in Digital Darkroom. If I'm not mistaken, they won't penalize you for a wrong category choice. If you can't decide, try CatchAll.

Category selection here at BP is very flexible. Most of the time, a photo may fit into a few different categories.
Usually adding effects, borders, and background would not limit so that it has go into the Digital Darkroom.

Do you have the photo displayed in your gallery, then which one? If not, display it.
If we can see it, others would step forward and give your his/her ideas.

Thank you Carolyn and Nobi. I was under the assumption that things were flexible but have read somewhere on here that putting them in the incorrect category kind of "disqulifies" that photo. Not the exact verbiage but my understanding of what I read.

Nobi, the photo entitled Nebula Storm in my gallery. :-) I tired to upload it to the question thread and when I couldn't the thread entered twice. :-) Thanks again!

Samantha, I think it would only be disqualified if it were in an obviously wrong category, such as a dog photo under Flowers. If it fits into more than one, it's really your call. I did have one instance where I entered a car shot under Details and Macro, because in my opinion it was a detail shot. It did not garner an EP, but the following month when I entered it in Catch-All, it did. So if at first you don't succeed -- re-enter! :-)

Thanks Deb. I'm starting to think that re-entering is a good thing. Even if it takes "13 months". LOL Read that in another thread somewhere. :-)

Great work on your Nebula Storm, Samantha.

I would put it in Animal category first because even with digital work you did creating the border and background, the horse is still a good horse as original.

Then depending on the result at the end of the month, you have the option of entering it to the Digital Darkroom, Catch-All, etc.

Thanks Nobi. :-) I thought the original stood alone but the added effects and background enhanced it more. That's what I read in the Resources / tips section here at BP. It just made me unsure as to which category to put it in. :-) From the responses I've been reading and have received it seems the rule of thumb is to re-enter until it is finallly accepted. LOL Thanks again!
