DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LENS 75-300 OR 70-300

I was wondering what is the difference between these two lens:
Canon 75-300mm IS / Canon 70-300,mm IS there are alot of both of these around when you start looking but I have not came across anything that tells me what the difference is, can anyone explain?
Thanks for your help.

Jeannie, I just checked the canon site and it looks like the 75-300 is not image stabilized (IS). Here's the link:

According to Canon Museum, the first EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 (without USM) lens was introducted in June 92. Since then there were various upgrades to this lens:

EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 II in July 95
EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM in March 95
EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM in Sept. 95
EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III in April 99
EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III USM also in April 99

The IS version was the very first lens in Canon history to incoporate IS technology (and I own a piece of this history, LOL).

In June 2004, a significant improved lens with similar focal range was introduced, the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM, aimed at the professional market with Diffractive Optics technology.

The newer EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM that came out in Oct. 2005 was to replace the 75-300mm IS version. The major differences include replacement of one lens element with Ultralow Dispersion (UD) glass element that improved image quality, better lens coatings, improved IS mechanism, mode 2 IS option for panning, and the zoom ring can be locked at 70mm position.

You can find all the information here:

Hope this helps.

Agreed. And the current 70-300mm IS zoom is much! better than the older models.

See the Review at
