Photographing 4 or 5 people in a single shot. Merry Christmas everyone: I shot some flash pictures with my Sigma 10-20mm lens, and what disturbed me is the distortion at both ends. There were 5 people lined up side by side. The color was good, and the lighting was good. I shot at 1/250 of a second, f5.6 aperature. I'm thinking, this is not practical with this lens because of the barrel effect. I have a Tamron 19-35mm f3.5-4.5. Would this be a better alternative? I was standing about 8 feet away when I took the shot. Thanks, for your time and patience. Charley Andrisano

In situations where the "barrel effect" matters, for bowed lines in architectural shots or for lop-sided heads in groups of people, try not to use a zoom lens at the widest focal length. If you do a lot of this, try to own one prime (one focal length) lens known to show little or no distortion. This shot, http://www.dougnelsonphoto.com/-/dougnelsonphoto/detail.php?photoID=1288892&cat=9096, taken with a 24mm prime, shows more of this effect in the heads at the right than I like to see. I have since replaced this lens.

Hi Charley, Wide-angle lenses are very UNflattering for people because of the distortion. As you found. Have fun!
