Olympus E410 flash stutter

I'm brand new to DSLR. I just bought the Olympus Evolt 410. It does this weird stutter flash thing when I use it in semi low light conditions. I've tried changing the modes and it works a bit better in some of the scene modes, but when I use it in auto mode, the flash stutters and there is a lag before it actually takes the picture. It's driving me crazy!!! I want to return the camera. I bought it because I have 2 young girls and I want to be able to snap quick shots. Thanks for any advice.

That's probably the cam's pre-flash, Lisa, which it needs to measure the distance to subject and/or to prevent red-eye.

Switch off the red-eye setting and see if that stops the flash 'stuttering'.
The trade-off is of course that you would get more red-eye in your pix. But that can be edited out in PP.

Have fun!
