Photography Question

Jordan Vallance

Which lenses?

I'm looking into upgrading my camera to a digital SLR. I currently have a Cannon PowerShot S2 1S. I enjoy shoting portraits (particularly of animals), wildlife, landscapes and macro. I am thinking that the body that would best suit me would be a Cannon 400D or Cannon 350D? Which lenses should I get for my subjects? What's the main differences between them?
Thanks for your input.

  Hi Jordan.
You won't go wrong with either the 400D (XTi) or the 350D (XT). If your budget is tight, you can pick up an XT really inexpensive now. If I were buying, I would get the XTi. I have the XT and my dad has the XTi and the main features I would want from the XTi are the 3" LCD and the sensor cleaning capability. As far as lenses go, what you like to shoot will require different lenses. For wildlife, you will want a telephoto and for landscapes a wide angle. In my personal opinion, I don't like the lenses that go from wide angle to telephoto - the images are not as good. I would get the kit lens which is an 18-55mm which will cover your wide angle needs pretty well. This lens is not high end, but it's not bad. For the telephoto, if you have a big budget and want a zoom, I would go with the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. This is a great, but expensive, lens. If cost is an issue, look for something with image stabiliztion to help compensate for the smaller apeture. I should warn you - getting into an SLR is an addicting and expensive hobby - there is always a new lens or other accessory that I want. The good news is it is great fun - you will love it. Good luck!
