Photography Question

Cory Reynolds

I would like to buy the new nikon D300 ..

I was wondering about buying the new nikon D300. Right now, I have the D70s and would like to upgrade to the D300. Anyone out there that has the new nikon, do you highly recommend this camera? And if so, what camera did you upgrade from before the D300? Thanks for any answers ... Cory

Cory, mine is supposed to be on its way. I previously owned a D2X and a D200. When the D300 was announced, I was shocked to find that its specs were better than the D2X. Slightly higher resolution, capable of 14 bit digital coversion, frame rate pretty close, 100% viewfinder coverage, full weather sealing. Reportedly there is also better noise control, an almost HD back LCD and two versions of live view through the LCD. Based on this info, it appeared that the D300 would significantly undercut the value of the D2X, so I sold mine and got on the preorder list for the D300.

  Hey Bill,

One question that I have been wondering about, is, when they first anounced the D300, I was under the impression it was a full frame sensor just like the D3; but, the specs I've read say it's a CMOS sensor and has the same crop factor as my D70S. Do you have any quick and dirty explaination of the differences between the CCD in the D70S, the CMOS in the D300, and the full frame sensor in the D3? Or a link to a site that will explain the differences? Thanks!

Todd, the D300 is still a DX format with a 1.5 crop factor. My impression is that Nikon is now calling the D300 its professional DX format body while the D3 will be the professional full frame or FX body. As far as the differences in the sensors, without getting into technicalities that are beyond me - a CCD and CMOS sensor do the same thing but with slightly different technology. The only significant difference I have heard of is the the CMOS uses less energy so that it runs cooler and generates less noise. But it is more expensive than a CCD. Both the D300 and the D3 use CMOS sensors with about the same number of pixels but in the D3 sensor the pixels are much larger. The trade off is that you technically lose a little resolution that you probably won't notice but gain a tremendous capacity to shoot in low light without unacceptable noise.

Cory, I have to second Erin's assessment. The D300 is an amazing camera. The 51 point 3D focusing may be psychic it stays on the subject so well. I don't know whether the sensor has more dynamic range than previous sensors or whether it is just using the range it has better but even RAW files come out well saturated and with good contrast. On many pictures I took this weekend I really didn't need to do anything but some sharpening. Well exposed photos at 800 ISO show no discernable noise. The baack LCD is everything it has been represented that it would be. This camera is not just an advance from the D200 but from the D2X as well. If the camera is in your price range and you can find it - get it. You will not be diappointed.
