Photography Question

Kevin Kabuki

Proper photo size for B.P.

What is the best size (in pixels) to submit photos to the contest. The suggested 500 pixel wide does not seem to be the best clarity. Any suggestions? Thanks

While I've never won a contest, when I post images to my web site, I stay within the recommended 500x750 pixels or less, which is tiny. But, often I increase the resolution up to but not exceeding 180 ppi and still use jpg so the system won't crash.

I've always had the best luck keeping one side to 480, and having the image appearing on the BP site look like the original one on my monitor; however, as of about 10 days ago, I noticed that BP is now resizing my longer horizontal format images, and greatly reducing them in size. Apparently, there is a new limit to the long side now---at least horizontally---although I haven't seen it posted by BP anywhere. Read the thread started by Colleen Farrell: Photo shrunk on upload

BP prefers NO MORE than 500 on the short dimension. For example: 500 (w)x 750 (h) for a vertical image. This is stated below. They prefer 72 pixels per inch. But have stated that "Files larger than 2.5 MB are not accepted."

Having larger files will simply not upload!

All this is written right below the box that I'm typing in, for everyone to read.

Hope this helps.

any photo with more than a 700 pixel horizontal dimension is being automatically "resized" by BP now. I thought long vertical format images would be safe from shrinkage; but I found out today, that my 480 wide by 880 long image was "resized"---and the detail and clarity reduced--by QUITE a bit.

Would it have been reduced by BP if you had first reduced it yourself to fit their limits? I doubt it. I doubt that my images been reduced.

This URL has grown so expeditiously that it will crash if people do not follow directions and work with the system. One only has to click onto "photo arrivals" to see how many images come in every hour of every day, 365 days a year, year in and year out. The images never stop.

Entering 480 side is fine; entering 880 long is NOT. That's 130 pixels do many on the length.

Many folks, including myself, have uploaded pano-type photos...the short side being 480 and the max size, 1000 or so. Wasn't a problem...but now BP has changed the max dimension, such that it will automatically resize the max to 750 or so, meaning the other dimension goes down, effectively making the photo smaller than previously..not a big deal, but certainly a difference. I realize BP has challenges with long panos..my suggestion to BP was to make the max no more than 1000; a compromise.

I feel that those who feel this way should contact Heather or other folks at BetterPhoto.com.

For me, I try to work within their system so that there is space for everyone. After all, we are not charged for each image we upload images to our web site, only for the web site, itself.

I feel that BP staff are making stipulations already as a compromise so as to not raise their prices for all of us.

At least, that's my take on the situation at hand.

I appreciate the opportunity that BP provides for photographers around the world to share their images with one another. And I understand their challenge with offering free, or inexpensive BW for galleries. From time to time, when I upload a photo and look at the ID number associated with it, I realize the millions of photos they are "serving" on their site. The maximum image length used to be 1250--which is now about 720 (without any auto-resizing). I understand their need to limit it; I will simply miss seeing some of the great, long pano shots that used to be posted here. :-)
