Tripod for Family portraits indoors??

I have a Canon Rebel XT with an 18-55mm lens and also a sigma macro 55mm fixed lens as well, I also have a Canon 430ex speedlite flash that I use as well. So I am thinking o getting a tripod?? Do I really need a tripod for indoor photography.. I dont like to use them for portraits ( because I like to move around alot, I take lots of children pictures) but I was thinking it would be good to have one for family portraits or shooting outdoors.. any help and any reccommendations on what to buy? I want something sturdy and well made but also not so heavy I cant carry it outdoors with me.
Thanks!!

I'm no expert in tripods, but the first and only tripod I've ever owned is the Quantaray Titan II - QT II-550. It works great, not too heavy, and is easy to adjust so I've never looked into any other tripods.

I do think a tripod is good to have. If anything it helps me plan out my composition a little better. And if you're a wiz with PS, you can switch out heads when you do your editing if necessary (it can be tough to get all the little ones smiling and ready at the same time).

My tripod has a level thingy on it and the adjustable feet with spikes. If I had to purchase a new tripod I'd look for those features. The absolute must is the quick release. I keep it on my camera at ALL times.

If you have a decent camera store near you I'd go in and take a look around. A tripod isn't something I'd feel comfortable purchasing online because I'd want to play with it and see how sturdy it feels first.
