Photography Question

what lens to buy

I have a canon rebel xt and am looking for a zoom lens for it. It came with a 18-55mm 3.5-5.6. I am very new to this whole photography thing. What I need is a good priced zoom lense to take pictures of my kids on the soccer field and possibly for some portraits. I was looking at the 70-300mm, but was told that I really need to look for something with an aperature closer to 3. Any recommendations? I would sure appreciate it, before I spend a lot of money when I won't be happy with the results. I am obviously not looking for professional results, but do tend to like good stuff. Thanks

An f/2.8 zoom, like the EF 70-200 f/2.8L USM, is very good for sports, but also very expensive. A bit more reasonable is the EF 70-200 f/4L USM. Sigma makes a 50-150 f/2.8 EX HSM that might deserve a look (I've no experience with it).

However, the image quality of DSLRs is good enough to use higher ISO settings of 400 or 800 so you can use less expensive f/4-5.6 zooms with good results. The EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM has Image Stabilization and very good optics. On a strict budget, the Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 DG APO is a good deal. Canon has announced an economical EF-S 55-250 f/4.5-5.6 IS lens that promises good performance, but I don't think it is available yet. LINK

minor typo: new Canon 55-250 lens is f/4-5.6, not f/4.5-5.6.

I have an XT and have used several lenses with it. I have the 70-200 f/4
L. I really like it, but to use the long end in anything but bright light you almost need a tripod or bump the ISO way up. Are you wanting to photograph your kids inside or outside? I also have the 28-135mm IS (about $400)- works good and is a great walk around, all purpose lens. I had the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 and sold it for the 70-200 f/4 L. I wasn't happy with its sharpness. There are so many lenses to choose from. I also just bought a Tamron lens - my first 3rd party lens. I got the 17-50mm f/2.8 so you already have that range covered, but I would say to check out the 3rd party brands. You can often get a good lens at a good savings. Good Luck!
