Photography Question

Julie C. Martin

ordering larger pictures

I want to print some of my pictures in larger sizes. I uploaded them to mpix.com and if I tried to order them in large prints some of them cut off the tops or sides. Is this because I used jpeg files? Thanks

Julie, this does not have to do with the file type (JPEG). However, you need to be aware of the proportion of width ot height - the typical image from a 35MM or digital camera may differ from the proportions on an 8x10 or 16x20.

For example, the ratio of width to height on a 35MM film camera is 1.5 (as it iw with the chips in Nikon DSLRs). That is, the width of the image is 1.5 times the length of the height.

If you print a 4x6, you are precisely matching that ratio, so no image information is lost. But if you print an 8x10, you can see that the ratio is now 1.25 (that is, 10/8) - so you will lose some image along the width.

No doubt this is why you see missing sections on the tips or sides - you will need to crop somethig to math the ratio of the output.

Hi Julie, What Bob said and I just wanted to add that you can select the crop size in Photoshop, Elements and most other editing software and crop them yourself before sending to mpix so that you will control how they are cropped. I print my own 13 x 19 prints and have to chop off just a little to get my images to fit but with some of my tighter shots, it is crucial for me to crop them to my liking. Also, by cropping them yourself, you may decide on a different size print to minimize cropping the image too much.

Julie, I use mpix and crop myself. I make crop copies for each size I want. That said, at some point during the ordering process with mpix it will show your file with a red outline designating the crop and what it will look like. You can move it but it will always maintain that crop. ie 8x10, 5x7, etc. If you precrop the outline will be around the border of the picture. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will remember to leave extra room on the top, bottom and sides for cropping. Thanks again!
