Which lens get for Canon 40d

Hi! I already decided that I am buying canon 40d. I see some promotional kit that goes with it. Is it good idea to get a body togeather with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens? The prize is 1499,99$.The body itself costs 1299,99$. Slowly I will start getting defrent kind of lenses, just at the biggining I need some lens that will be most functional. Or Should I get lens ,sth like 24-70mm and forget the kit lens. I may assit a photogrpaher at his wedding shots so I would like a lens that will be usfull at this event. What are the basic, essential lenses that I should defintly get? thank you all for your time and any advice.

The 28-135 mm IS lens is a good lens, but it won't let you take wide angle pictures. Since the lens factor for the Canon 40D is, I believe, the same as for my 30D [1.6.] you'll have an effective 45 mm [normal] focal length.

Think about the 17-85 mm IS and, perhaps, wait a while - Shutterbug is speculating that Canon will introduce an 18-200 mm lens early next year.

John is right that you won't be able to get wide angle shots. I have a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 which is an awesome lens. You can get it for $449 and Tamron has on going rebates, just check their website. The IQ of this lens is equal to the Canon version of it, which costs about twice as much. The Tamron does not have IS.

I just bought the 40D this weekend. I would recommend getting the kit - even if you don't use the lens, it is worth about $400 and you only pay half that if you buy it with the kit. If you don't like it you can sell it on e-bay and make a little money to put towards a different lens. The kit lens isn't too bad - it is a good all around lens. It is lacking the wide angle range, but the long end is a good range. I also have the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and like it. My only complaint is that the autofocus is loud. The combination of the kit plus the Tamron is good. Good luck - the camera is great!
