Beginner photographer

I am getting started in what I hope to be a future in digital photography and I was wondering if anyone could give me some options on what cameras and other accesories that I should buy. I am not able to spend a lot at this time so I am looking in the $500 area for the camera. I am thinking of going the slr digital way.

If I were you, I wouldn't buy anything just yet, Charles. As a rule of thumb, you determine what equipment is in your price range AFTER you figure out what you want to shoot with it. And if you're just starting out in photography, whether digitally or film, you need a camera you can learn on as well.

As to expandable, digital SLR's, there are a fair number of folks here who know a lot more about them than I do.
Take it light. ;>)

  Charles,

You will have to provide further information for anyone to guide you intelligently.

1) Do you have ANY experience in photography?

2) What will you mostly be photographing?

3) Do you have any knowledge in photo editing?

$500 is not a lot to spend in this field, but you certainly can get started with great success?

You may not even need a digital camera to start off in digital photography.

all the best,

Pete

After crunching my 35mm climbing over a log on a camping trip, I wanted to try out the digital realm and bought a Fuji Finepix S602 fixed lens DSLR in 2001 that had full manual controls and hot shoe for a flash. The camera has very good color & contrast and I learned to use photoshop for processing my images. This camera is only 3.1 megapixels but takes very nice photos. I used this camera until about 3 years ago when I decided I liked the digital realm and wanted to create better images and bought the Canon 20D and some L lenses. I think my decisions and progression into digital photography worked very well for me. I continue to grow and have fun with my learning curve. I just bought Corel Painter & a Wacom tablet to learn to turn my photos into paintings and I am loving this program. So now Charles, you can get a 9 megapixel S9000 Fuji that blows my old one away for less than $400 - http://www.amazon.com/Fujifilm-Finepix-S9000-Digital-Optical/dp/B0007GIXS8/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1195195418&sr=8-32
The camera also shoots RAW which makes a big difference when you want to process them yourself. Hope this helps.

Personally, when faced with this question I recommend 2 cameras, that I own and still use today.
Now , it does depend a lot on what you'd like to do.
For studio work, I recommend the
Fuji S2. This camera has beautiful color and is easy and a pleasure to use.
As you can see, all my cameras in my gallery, the fuji S2 is slower then my Second recommendation but it is possible to plan your shots and get some nice sports shots as seen in the BMX shots.
My second recommendation is the Nikon D70 or D70s.
This is a light wieght, fast little camera that I LOVE! as you will see many here on BP do as well.
Both can be found on Ebay Between 350-450.
and are both worth thier wieght in gold to me.
I have the Nikon D200/D70/Fuji S2
and each one is a pleasure to use.
Fuji and Nikon share compatible lens and other equiptment, which make it really nice and easy to have the Fuji in studio and the others on the road.

Heres the Fuji S2 research:
