focusing issues

i am having trouble with the subjects being out of focus. I have a canon 30D and I put the little red focus square on the subject and when I look at the pictures on my computer screen, the subject is out of focus but the background is in focus.

Check a number of things. Are you using the Portrait or Landscape settings. If so, there's a chance your letting the camera over-ride the focus points.

Check whether your camera is set to specifically use one focus point. Check your manual for instructions how to make the change back to nine focal points.

Stay away from full Auto or "P" mode. Again, you give up control to the camera.

Set your camera to Av [aperture priority. Then go for f/8 or f/11. These settings will give a little more depth of field' something you may want.

Thanks John, I will check that out. I am rather new to actually having to pay attention to camera settings. I am used to the point and shoot mentality.

  John gives some good advice.

Another thing that may help. Get in the habit of pushing the shutter button halfway, instead of just giving it a full push when you take a picture.

When you push the shutter button halfway, look at the viewfinder and you will see the shutter speed and aperture that will be used, as well as which focus points will be in focus. The points that light up red will be in focus. If the point over your subject is not lit up, then your subject will not be in focus.

If you shoot in a Creative Mode like Av (Aperture Priority), then you will be able to select which focus point will be used.

Thanks Chris. I do push half way and check to see what is in focus, putting the red square on my subject. When I open the pics up on my screen, the subject is blurry and the backgroud is in focus. It's seems that just recently that it is doing this. I don't remember having these troubles this summer after I bought it.
