Shooting slides from books I am gathering images to create a slide library for a small crafts school and need tips on taking photos from printed media. I did this years ago in college but am now working with a digital camera, and also can't remember what would be the best type of lighting (halogen?) etc. I can set up a booth but just need tips on technique, any info would be a blessing. Thank you!

For photographic reproduction of printed materials you would need a copystand with appropriate lighting, and a lot of time. A lot easier, faster, cheaper, and generally better quality is the use of a scanner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copy_stand

Before you race out and buy a copy stand, before you buys any lighting and BEFORE YOU START REPRODUCING COPYRIGHT PROTECTED MATERIALS, you'd better contact the publisher of whichever books you plan to take photographs of. Unless the work is in the public domain, (it's probably not), or the copyright has expired without being renewed, or you've already obtained their written permission, you're probably about to violate their copyright(s). If you get caught, the penalties and legal fees could run you and your small crafts school hundreds of thousands of dollars for willful infringement. Some publishers, for a very small fee paid to the photographer(s) might even agree to provide you with usable copies of the images you want for a mild fee. Others will be dead set against this because they protect their artists. But you better ask first before you start traveling down a very very slippery slope. If you've any doubts about whether you can do this under the current copyright law, you also should contact a lawyer in your local area who specializes in intellectual property law and get their opinion in writing so you may be able to rely on it as a defense.
