420EX Slave Trigger Can I use an optical slave with a 420EX? Camera is a 300D. I was hoping to be able to have the option of keeping the 420EX on the camera, as a radio wireless takes that spot. I have heard that the 420EX fires a preflash that will not allow an optical slave trigger to work with this. Any experts out there that can help? Thanks-Tom

"I was hoping to be able to have the option of keeping the 420EX on the camera, as a radio wireless takes that spot." You can't have both on top of your camera simultaneously, Tom. It's either/or.

Typing this late I did not explain what I was trying to ask. Could I use a optical trigger fired by the 420EX or does the optical have to be triggered by the sorry pop up flash? Then, id I wanted to use a radio wireless, is there a radio wireless available to fire the 420EX as a slave. The radio recievers I have seen appear to be made to work with pro style lighting, no hotshoe mount. Sorry if I am confusing, after midnight who knows what I might say... Thanks-Tom

If I understand Canon's website correctly the ST-E2 transmitter they sell is dedicated to the 550EX flashgun... Dunno if the 300D/420EX combo can be set to wireless remote, taking care of the preflash. Some cameras do. I yours does your manuals ought to cover it. In general, "the sorry pop up flash" works excellently as a trigger to remote, wireless flashguns. Used a Minolta setup like that for years. And still do.

Looks like I have finally found a constructive use for that tiny flash mounted to my camera. I'll get two optical slaves for portable off camera flash and give this setup a shot when I need low strength battery powered light. Thanks for the tip.

The ST-E2 controller will work with remote mounted 420EX, 430EX, 550EX, 580EX, and 580EX II. The 300D's built-in flash works in E-TTL mode only and so will always fire a pre-flash. To use it to set off remote flash with optical triggers, those optical triggers need to be made specifically for digital systems so that they ignore the pre-flash. Otherwise they'll fire the remote flash before the shutter opens.

As Jon said, the built-in flash works in E-TTL mode only in all Canon digital cameras. Also only the 580EX II, 580EX, 550EX, 430EX, MT-24EX and MR-14EX can be set to manual on a E-TTL (II) camera. If you only have the 420EX, the following article may help: http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#disableettl

"optical triggers need to be made specifically for digital systems so that they ignore the pre-flash" Do you know of any that you can point us to, Jon? –––––––– "give this setup a shot when I need low strength battery powered light" Tom, FYI, I've used my "sorry pop up flash" to trigger up to 5x 5600D's and 3x 3rd party brand flashguns simultaneously without a hitch. I bet double that number wouldn't be a problem either.

"optical triggers need to be made specifically for digital systems so that they ignore the pre-flash" Here's one, for example. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/396592-REG/Sunpak_DIGIADAPT_Digital_Camera_Flash_Adapter.html

Here are a few more, all from B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/263024-REG/Wein_W940030D_HS_Hot_Shoe_Slave.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/310643-REG/Speedotron_23504_DS_1_Digital_Slave_Trigger_.html The Speedotron looks interesting. I may get one for myself. However I don't know how these slaves work with the 420EX. I have tried my 420EX and 550EX on a Hama optical slave with a film camera that in manual mode the camera does not fire a preflash. After each time the flash fired, the flash just don't fire again without turning it off then on again. But it works pretty well with my Metz flash.
