Quality of images How was the quaility of photographs judged before megapixels or digital photography????

On general impression and appearance, and/or with a magnifying glass. Judging photos was very subjective. That changed 160 degrees* when digital technology introduced measurable quantification (pixels, dpi, ppi, etc.). * Not 180 degrees as there still remains a subjective component in the quality determination of photos.
