Photography Question

Jennifer D. Berhorst

Adobe Photoshop

I am wanting to purchase Photoshop but I dont know what version to get. I am just getting started and know how to use it pretty good. I want to know if I should get the 5.0 version or the 6.0 version. I know there are some really expensive versions out there, but these two are at a reasonable cost to buy. Thanks.

I start with Elements...I think you can even buy the thing at Costco? You can download a free trial on Adobe's site. I mean if you are just getting started but know how to use it pretty good then you sound like you know everything already...JK

If you don't need to use Layers and you use Windows, I'd recommend using Helicon Filter, which is easier to use than Photoshop and pretty awesome.

  Jennifer,
Adobe Photoshop is currently being distributed as CS3. The numbers you are using are for Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is likely the right program for you. Version 6 just came out (about a month ago), and it is worth getting the newer version. There are some big differences between Photoshop and Elements, but for a beginner and for digital photography, you will not go wrong with Elements.

Ariel...EVERYONE needs layers ;-)

About snipshot...$9/month...if you like the rudimentary controls. In 6-7 months, your subscription costs as much as Elements, and you keep on paying. I don't know that it is "a lot cheaper". If I were to have been using it for the last 17 years, it would have cost $1836, and that is about as much as a Photoshop license with upgrades over the same period -- but with a lot fewer features (un, where ARE layers? -- and that is if you choose to upgrade every version that comes out (who does that!??!).

Lots of things are cheaper than Photoshop, and usually there is a good reason. Not very many things are cheaper than Elements, which is probably your best image-editing deal.

About snipshot... FYI, it's FREE, Rich!

Yeah, I know: you get what you pay for. But does the average Joe Blow or Jane Doe need any more than snipshot – the FREE version! – provides? Because, IF they got more features/specs, could they use them...?

We ain't all Richard L.'s, you know.

Costco=PHotoshop Elements $79.99 plus you can grab a bunch of tasty samples along the way...I love the Ravioli and Tritip samples best....oh yeah and grab container of Brownie Bites....Yummy.
She already knows how to use it even though she's a beginner. Strive to be better than the average Joe Doe or Jane Blow.
