Photography Question

Debbie Crowe

difference between Flash Bounce and Diffuser?

I am preparing to order a kit that includes the 430EX speedlite flash, bracket, rechargeable batteries, etc etc, but have a choice between the following:
Flash Bounce Reflector vs Sto-Fen Omi Bounce Diffuser. What is better choice? What are they used for?
Thanks, Deb

Hi Deb, the diffuser attaches to the front of your flash head and the light shoots through it to soften the light. Strobe light is very harsh particularly coming from a small source such as a speedlight head. There are a number of flash bounce reflectors on the market. They are typically a white card, umbrella or material that instead of pointing your flash at your subject you point it at the reflector and bounce the light to your subject. Bouncing softens the light because the reflector is usually bigger than your flash head and so becomes a bigger and more diffuse light source. Having said that, I have not found that the reflectors designed for speedlights are large enough to make a significant difference. I would go with the diffuser as it is small, easy to use and probably will be more useful in a larger variety of situations.

Debbie, you might also want to chck into the Gary Fong lightsphere or whaletail - I have found the lightsphere to be far superior to the StoFen (I'll sell you mine) or the Lumiquest units I've had before.

You can see examples and I think some video at www.garyfong.com
