Price for Cover Photo I received an email from a graphic designer interested in using one of my photos for the cover of a parade of homes magazine. She wants to know my price and I have no idea what to charge. I googled her and she's legit. Suggestions? Thank you, Janet

Janet, Try this: http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm You'll need to know the number of copies, etc. It is based on prices others have charged for the same type thing.

Thank you so much, Todd! I just wrote to her to find out the circulation. :-)

One thing to remember is that these people may be looking to get something for nothing. When you give them a price they may balk; but, as a photog, you should get paid for your work. If they are legit, they will pay a reasonable amount. Good luck.

And to supplement what Todd's already covered, you can also contact SRDS (Standard Rate and Data Service) They keep track of publications, their circulations both paid and unpaid, and their advertising rates. That's a handy baseline for calculating photo costs for editorial covers. Take a single full page color ad cost and multiply x 10 for starters. And btw, if they tell you they're a non-profit organization, tell them that "non-profit doesn't mean NO profit" Take it light ;>)

Thanks, Mark.... I wrote her back and asked the circulation and how much they typically get for a cover photo and haven't heard back.
