Using IS with a monopod Should the IS feature be turned off when using a monopod? I know to turn it off when using a tripod but was not sure about the monopod. Thank you

Depends on which IS lens you're using. The 4 earlies implementations needed to be turned off when tripod mounted because the IS become erratic attempting to correct movement that wasn't there. EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM (discontinued), EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 300 f/4L IS USM, and EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. Re monopod use, if you are panning with a moving subject, leave IS on. If holding as still as possible, turn it off. All IS lenses introduced subesequently will automatically switch to a tripod mode that attempts to correct minute vibrations from the mirror flipping up. These can be left on or off when used on a tripod or monopod.

Hi Niles, short answer is use it on a monopod since it is not a stable platform and is subject to movement. Bill

With my 100-400mm IS, I have it on with my monopod & the photos are sharp and then turn it off on my tripod.
