Photography Question

William Piacenti

what settings for outdoor or indoor flash fill?

I'm using a rebel xti with canon 24-105L f4IS lens primarily. I've been "hired" to do some outdoor portraits/headshots for a friend. I've never used a different flash other than the one on the camera. If needed for fill, what settings should the camera be on?
Any tips or advice on this would be a huge help! Thanks!

http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/ is a good reference. Scroll down to Part II for specifics on fill flash.

Shoot in one of the Creative exposure modes (P, Av, Tv, M) so that you can select the flash to fire. You should start with the FEC (flash exposure compensation) set to 0. The EOS system with Evaluative and E-TTL metering automatically vary the flash output from main light to reduced power fill flash. With experience you may want to vary the FEC to your liking.

Note that the fastest shutter speed that can be used with flash is 1/200. In sunny outdoor fill flash situation, that can be limiting. To keep from overexposing the background you (or the camera) will set a small aperture, which will give perhaps greater depth of field than desired, and also severely limits the effective range of the low powered built-in flash.

With a high-powered accessory speedlight that has FP high speed sync (such as Canon's 430EX), any shutter speed can be selected. In sunny outdoors where traditional flash sync would limit you to a setting of 1/200 and f/16, a high speed sync flash would allow 1/3200 and f/4.
