Photography Question

A digitial camera for my kids

I am wanting to get my son and daughter a digitial camera for Christmas. They just love it when I take their pictures and they want to do it too. My son is 4 and my daughter is almost 3. I was wondering if anyone has bought the fisher price camera for their little ones and how they like it. Or can you recommend something else to me? I have tried to let them use my film canon rebel, but it's too heavy for them and they really want to see their pictures afterwards, but just can't bring myself to let them use my Canon XT. Any recommendations?

I have twins that will be turning 6 in a few weeks. We gave them the Fisher Price digital camera for Easter.

I would not recommend this camera unless they update it.

On the positive side, it's ruggedly-built and very easy to operate, just like you would expect a Fisher Price camera to be.

On the negative side, the images are only 640x480 pixels, and the image quality is rather poor. You need to use the flash indoors, but if you're too close (which my kids usually are), the picture will be very overexposed.

I don't see the point in anyone making a 0.3MP camera today. It just seems like they could make it a more practical resolution and still keep the cost low. If the pictures don't even look good on your screen, what's the point?

My daughter uses a cute little Canon 1Ds MarkIII and it's GREAT.JK I got her a 3.2mp Hello Kitty camera and it works great. If you look on EBay you'll see them from $40-$80. Of course it's probably painted with lead paint.

Thanks guys!! You have been really helpful! They are really getting into photography and I want to encourage it. They even like to get onto the website with me and look at everyone's pictures!! Thanks again! I think I will stay away from the fisher price one and look into some others.

  Hi Amber.
My son just got the Fisher Price camera for his birthday, and everyone is right, the images are really worthless, especially since we are all photographers and probably have pretty high standards. On the upside, it is rugged and will take the abuse of a 3 year old. My son was using my old point and shoot Canon Powershot and LOVED it, until he managed to break it. He had used for some time before he did, but I should have know it would eventually happen. My advice, get something like the Fisher Price while they are really young (ie 3-4) and once they get older and can take care of it better, get them a nicer camera. We got my daughter, now 7, a nicer point and shoot last year and she does a pretty good job of taking care of it. For my son, its not the photos the camera takes that he enjoys, it is just having the ability to take them. Good luck!
