Computer storage problems

Hello everyone!! I have some questions and need some advice. I am still new to photography and have recently bought photoshop 5. My problem is that I have so many images on my computer, that it is taking up so much space on my computer, which is making it go so slow. So, I have a few questions.

1. I need to backup my pictures, because right now, they are just on my computer. So, should I be saving them to a CD?

2. What can I do with my photos so that I can have access to them and still be able to download them and edit them with PS without them being on my computer since I am running out of room on my hard drive? Maybe an external hard drive?

I would appreciate any help here. Maybe you can tell me what you do and how you save your photos?

Thanks in advance!!

Amber

What I do is put them on a CD and then go back and downsize to BP upload size and save them on the computer in the smaller size.

Hi Amber. I've used CDs in the past and they work great if you're organized and have room to store them. Neither applies to me.

I now use an external hard drive to store and back up everything. I like it because I don't have to label and store CDs. It's small, turns on and off with the push of a button and I just drag and drop the files from PC hard drive to the external drive by folder. I don't even rename them. If I'm leaving some on the PC I put them in a "backed-up" folder (I mainly do that because I roll my photos on my screensaver...). When I need to open one, I just select the external drive the same way I would any drive or folder and they're all right there. I don't have to search for a CD. It's a bit of an investment up front but it's been really easy and I don't want to keep track of CDs.

Hope this helps.

  Hello Amber,

CD's are a little out of style and not too practical due to image sizes these days.
I highly recommend DVD's for storage as they have a much higher capacity. Avoid cheap DVD media...get archival quality if you can.

My images are always backed up to a external HD and also a DVD. The images rarely stay on my computer internal drive very long.

all the best,

Pete

I use an external NAS (network attached storage) device... a hard disk that actually acts as a standalone file server, and that connects to my home network. I have it plugged in to my Ethernet hub in my office, and access it from my laptop via WiFi throughout the house.

The reason I chose a NAS device instead of just an external USB drive, is because the NAS runs without needing a computer (it actually has a built-in file server). I can access it remotely, meaning that if I'm on vacation and taking pictures, I can go to my local WiFi access point and transfer my images to my home.

I also use SyncToy, a program provided free by Microsoft and available on their website, to move new images from my memory cards to my NAS. And, I also use SyncToy to backup my NAS regularly to JungleDisk, which is a program that lets me back up data to Amazon's web servers. Yep, that Amazon. I've backed up images from every digital camera I've ever owned to the NAS, and they're automatically backed up to JungleDisk.

This way, I have a backup copy of my images on a separate drive (NAS), and also off-site (at Amazon), so even if my house burns down I won't lose any images.
