Photography Question

Tiff files end up being Microsoft Office Dig Files

When I have an open file in Photoshop CS2 and ask to "save as" in "Tiff", it ends up being saved as a Microsoft Office Document Imaging File. Could anyone explain why and/or tell me how to save as Tiff? Thanks!

Kathy – I am very much not an expert but I make so many mistakes I’ve learned a few things. At what point are you attempting to save the file? Do you convert from RAW and then save from the RAW editor? Or, do you import the file as a Jpeg and then save directly from PS? If you are saving from the RAW editor (presuming that you are using the PS RAW editor) make sure that you save to a folder within your “My Picture” files and not the general file ladder. Also make sure that you select the proper file extension from the drop down menu. If you are importing the file as a Jpeg, make sure that when you save it as a Tiff that you save it to you’re “My Pictures” file and again, make sure that the Tiff extension is applied. Sometimes if you save the file to the main “My Document” folder it is saved as a normal MS file. You need to check the format line under the save as menu to make sure that Tiff is showing. If none of this helps…well, hopefully someone with much more knowledge can help!

Kathy, is the extension still .tiff?

If the file extension is .tif, then it is being saved correctly, but the file is associated with a program other than PS. Right click on the file, and select Properties. A pop up window will appear. The tab showing shold be General. If not, select General. You will see Type of File: TIF Image (if the file is actually being saved as a tiff. If it shows a different file type, then something else is wrong). Just below that you will see Opens with: and a program will be listed here. If it is anything other than PS, you need to click the Change... button. A list of programs will pop up. Highlight Photoshop (if that is the program you want to open a tiff), then click OK. Tiffs will now be associated with Photoshop.

If you can't see file extensions in a folder, and you want to, you need to do this. Open the folder in which the file resides. At the top of the folder window, click on Tools, then select Folder Options. A pop up window called Folder Options will open. Click on the tab called View. You will see a list of options with check boxes next to them. Under the Files and Folders list (the first part of the list) you will see Hide extensions for known file types. Uncheck this box, then click OK. This will display the file extension.

Let me know if this works, or if it has confused you! ;-)

Thanks, David and Irene! One of the problems was that Microsoft was my default program for opening tiff files. But, thanks to Willie, I changed that to PS. But now even though I save as tiff (in PS) when I check the properties, it's listed as "Microsoft Office Document Imaging File". But when I open it, it opens in PS and has the extension .tif. So maybe it doesn't matter that it says it's a "Microsoft Office Document Imaging File" if it still opens as Tiff??? There was a full moon the other night, maybe I should have waited :) Any other ideas? Thanks again, so much!
