EFP Watch #2

The EFP thread was getting kinda long so I decided to start a new one. Anyone have an update on the latest EFP? I think my most recent is the 23rd. Thanks!

One obvious, good thing about getting fewer EFPs lately is that when you do get one, it means more. ;)

I'm glad we started a new thread as our compulsion continues. My last EFP is the 22nd for flowers. I've entered a photo every day since in various categories and nothing. I think everyone is off to the seminar and we won't hear anything further until next week.

I think they left off on the 24th but also think they did not do very many for that date. Here's hoping they pick up where they left off when they come back and don't just skip through a few days very quickly in order to catch up. I really like my entry from the 24th and still have some hope for it :)

Thanks, guys! I'll start them at the first of the month but I don't think this one will be old enough to start over on October 1st. If they get too long I can always do them bi monthly, the 1st and 15th.

Does anyone know if they do EFPs for all of the categories at one time.. or are different editors assigned to different categories? My animal pics got EFPs... but none of my Monthly Themes thus far. I'm sure they are behind with a record number of entries last month.. and the summit tomorrow. I used to get them regularly, but this month some that I thought should move on, have not been noticed. Thanks!

One question, I re-submitted some older images to the monthly theme category, under "Edit Your Photos" and moved them to the front of my gallery. Had I deleted and re-uploaded them, wouldn't they have lost their EFP emblems?

Just (within last hour or so) got one in Animals on the 25th. Hooray.
Glad and sad to see my 24th entry skipped. I put an earlier version in Catch All in August and put this version in Nature and Landscape in September and had already decided that if it did not get an EP, I would resubmit in October in Flowers. After that it will just have to sit in my gallery without a button :)

You should be proud of yourself!! And I don't thinking your bragging. It means a lot to know that your photos are going to the next round and that your photos are good! I look forward to everyday checking to see if any of mine have made it to the next round. This month, I have 5 going on (still waiting to see if the 30th for MT goes on), and I am proud.   It's October sixth and looks like EFP hasn't even looked at this month yet? Seeing most the EFP appear after midnight, I wonder if BP is outsourcing the judging to India or Pakistan where payroll is half U.S. rates? I can't fathom any other reason why many of the results are applied in the early hours unless BP employs night owls? Haven't figured this one out yet.

I don't want to take away from the pleasure we all feel when we first--or finally!--see an EP button beneath a favorite image or from the fun it is to celebrate those little victories with one another, but I think John has inadvertently brought up another perspective: that of the photographer who garners fewer EPs but who is still interested in knowing when they are coming out and in having a place to celebrate when s/he does get one. Now I know I'm not speaking for Sharon or John here, but . . .
Sharon started this thread simply to keep track of EP activity on BP; for the thread to work, participants must say when and in what category they got their most recent EPs. They do not, however, need to provide a monthly tally. It has been suggested before that it can look like bragging when one does so. Perhaps those who enjoy sharing that kind of statistic could start a separate "EP Monthly Tally" thread and leave this one for its original purpose: "EP Watch"

All this said while smiling…..please don’t read this with anger.

WOW! Nikki, I had no idea suggesting a final tally on EPs would be so offensive to anyone. Did you read your own comment…it’s very threatening. To not further offend other readers of this thread I will refrain from providing more the minimal amount of information. I’ll even try to use acronyms and simple letters like: “EP in TP = 01” For goodness sakes, smile and try not to take it so seriously.

Perhaps Sharon should chime in here and dictate what is allowed to be mentioned and what is not.

I don't feel giving a tally is bragging, but that is just my thought.

I think all of us work very hard to do well in the contest and I don't see why sharing our success is bragging. But If the majority don't want to read tallies then I won't post a tally.

It's not like I shot a photo and just toss it in. I spend hours on one photo alone. So when it makes it to the next round I'm happy my work paid off. Some times it doesn't and I just either resubmit or let it go.

If someone isn't doing well in the contest it doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad photographer.

John you take great photos. I love your bold use of color and sense of humor. But I think your editorial subject matter just doesn't always click with the judges.

Every site and every contest has it's own preference, here the majority that win are "pretty" photos with lots of color. Study the finalist and winners and you will see what I mean.

So there are two choices, shot what you want and submit it and just accept it may not be what the judges prefer. Or shot what you know the judges like but do it in your own style.

Sharon has said all this herself and I'm sure she will say it again :-) I credit part of my success in the contest to her. She told me to study the finalists and see what the judges like and then give them those type of photos.

By the way Sharon doesn't have computer access right now but should be back on line soon.

  Also wanted to add...

Don't get discouraged if your photo doesn't get and EFP the first time you submit.

There are now about 40,000 photos entered a month. With so many photos it's easy to over look lots of great ones. So just resubmit the photo again.

I can't imagine how hard it must be for the BP staff and judges to look at so many photos every month.

Also, just want to say if I could edit my original post and remove my tally I would. Sorry if people felt I was bragging.

While I can't find anything threatening in Nikki's post, it is to me, a logical blending of the two sides: 1) a method to keep track of "what day they're up to" in terms of processing entries, and 2) a logical place for people who naturally want to share their thrill at having had X number of entries make the first cut. (Where X is a number between 1 and 31, for that matter.)

As this is a contest, rather than a game, everyone is yearning to "win" with their work, in the end. Given the entire spectrum of skill levels represented (from blurry, red-eye snapshots, to book-quality art images) you cannot escape the inevitable; few people will receive many awards, many will receive none, and some will be in the middle territory. Everyone is at a different point on their journey with photography, and people will ultimately discover for themselves where that journey ends.

So the issue here seems to me, more about protecting the feelings of the photographers who don't get many (any?) EP's; thus, Les (and others) should refrain from sharing their results, lest the others get upset or discouraged, when they don't measure up. But this doesn't makes sense to me---not only is it a contest, with the whole point being to win, but, if Les were to chime in on this thread each day one of his images made EP, anyone could just count up his posts---there's his tally result, already in this thread. And when Finalists come out, you can't escape the comments people leave, like "Wow, is this four for you this month?" and "Congratulations on your 6 Finalists!"

Honestly, I think it would be far more pleasant to just not monitor, let alone obsess on EP's at all... They are first-round eliminations in the contest; not contest awards. If Finalists are "Fourth Place" in the contest (ie, behind 2nd, 1st and Grand as the top three awards) then EP's are akin to 7th place; 3 elimination rounds precede Finalists. I'd actually rather return to the time when BP didn't share the EP/Runner Up information in any form; you had to wait til Finalist Day, to see if anything of yours made it. I imagine BP introduced EP's primarily to help encourage those folks who never seemed to get a Finalist---this site is a business afterall, aimed at photography instruction as a key part of their business plan. So the EPs are kind of like, "Hey, you're on the right track... not quite medal-winning work yet, but don't give up..." But now, EP's have taken on a life and meaning of their own, often being seen as a kind of "win" in the contest (and I'm sure, as BP hoped, greatly encouraging many photographers to continue their pursuits.) But it almost seems as if the encouragement for some, is now, "Shoot to capture an EP, and call it a day."

The folks most obsessed with EP's (and sometimes, the biggest supporters of this new feature) seem to me to often be those who had the least luck securing Finalists... I believe many of these folks are seeking immediate validation of their work, from the BP contest, first and foremost. Rather than shooting to please themselves, or shooting to stretch themselves. Many people are certainly here to try and learn, to try and improve, but I also see those who don't appear to be on that path. I often wonder why they enter an international photography contest, month after month, to face certain disappointment.

To boil this down (too late!) I don't think that someone with such a delicate sensitivity, as to get upset when reading of a photographer's high EP tally compared to their own low (or empty) tally, should be entering a photography contest in the first place.
And I don't think there's anything wrong in sharing your own tally in a public forum like this. (Afterall, when someone here says "I just got my first EP ever!"---they have in fact, just shared their tally at that point, potentially to the discouragement of their neighbor, who has none...)

For what it's worth, I didn't see anything threatening in Nikki's comment at all--it just seemed like an attempt to sort of clarify what this particular thread is about.

I can see both sides of the "bragging/not bragging" issue. For those who don't get many EFPs, who haven't won any finalists, or gold badges, I can see how the tallies would seem like bragging, especially if they're coming from people who've won a lot.

On the other hand, if we can't share our successes with other photographers--the very people who really understand how hard it is to get that great image--who *can* we share it with? So, like I said, I can see both sides of the issue.

So, maybe all we need to do is join Melissa's club for further EFP discussion beyond the basic "EFP Watch"! There's certainly plenty to talk about! :D Recently, for example, I became aware of some really strange photos that got EFPs that made me wonder what the EFP process is all about! ;)

Susan--I think you're absolutely right about what style of photo wins, which makes it even more mysterious how some photos get EFPS! LOL

Chris I agree, I personally have become too obsessed with the EFPs, just like the contest itself :-)

I shoot for the contest, I shoot for stock and I shoot for myself. All have a place in my photography. And each motivates and pushes me to be a better photographer.

I don't see any harm in shooting for the contest if that helps you take better photos. But it is also important to keep shooting for yourself and find a place for those photos too. Maybe it's a different site, maybe it's a local photo club, maybe it's for the art show circuit...

I'd be very happy if we didn't know the EFPs for the current month and could opt out of displaying them. (And I thought BP was going to change the look of the EFP button???)

Colleen it is my understanding that EFPs are picked by the staff and judges don't come in until that is done. So that is where you would see a difference in EFP choices and what moves on to finalist.

I think we all come here (The EP thread) to share in the excitement or disappointment of our fav picks. Our familys & people outside of BetterPhoto just don't understand the thrill of getting an EP or the disappointment of not seeing it under your photo. So we come here to share with others that knows how it feels.

For me, Editors Picks are like a pat on the back for a job well done. A Non-EP makes me think there is something I could do different or I did nothing wrong and it's a beautiful photo and just didn't get picked for whatever reason.

When I see someone got an EP I go look at it and try to see what the judges liked about it. It really helps me learn what the judges like...

Try to have a great sunday everyone. :)

Susan is right re: judging the photo contest. I got to talking to one of the instructors during the BPC summit last week-end (it was incredible!). The instructor said that the first picks are by the staff. Then the instructors are asked to volunteer (it was mentioned 5 or 6, I can't remember) to judge. I just hope that the judges are varied from one month to the other. I remember the instructor saying that it's on a first come first served basis, so an instructor who is always on his/her computer and gets to see the request first could be on the judging panel many times ... and thus sometimes the winners/finalists look the same.

I agree the EFP medallion has become a motivating persuasion. Napoleon Bonaparte aptly stated "I have found men are willing to die for ribbons." Roughly meaning, the human ego has a strange disposition that can loose sight of the substance for lust of the recognition. Those who have been gifted with predominate right-brain creativeness, whether writer, musician, artist... all have a greater measure of ego. Primarily due to their intrinsic ability to create by means of their own substance. I mentioned to a fellow BP'er here that I thought it error for BP to add EFP medallions whereas it would become an obsession. When the recognition was unknown, only to be stumbled upon when browsing the classification, it was a simple treat. Now, many look to the medallions as evidence to if their entries are considered acceptable, as if the staff at BP are the final purveyors of one's talent. I have heard from several people discouragement, even consideration to abandon BP for lack of recognition. I doubt that BP will retract this system, so it becomes a growth edge for people to focus on the participation and the sharing of photos over the graphic symbol given by the BP system. My thoughts anyway :)

Getting an ep or not will not dampen my passion for photography in any way. I will continue to enjoy this hobby if I never get a ep, finalist or winner ever again! Yes I like those awards when I get them but not getting them will not keep me from this site which I very much enjoy!! I just wanted to know if they were giving out less of them (editors picks) these days? lol

Frankly I don't care about EFPs themselves and wish I could turn those buttons off in my gallery.

The only reason I am glad I got an EFP is because it means that photo is now in the group moving on to the next round in the contest.

Just got back from a whirlwind trip out west and thought I'd check in. You all have been busy LOL.

Thoughts on bragging...some do some don't :o). I do recall when I first began entering the contest I decided to start up a Yahoo group of BP members so we'd have a more informal way of keeping in touch. I had yet to receive a win so when some of the members who had numerous medals would complain after the announcement because their favorites weren't chosen I totally did not understand that. I thought they should be grateful to get a medal at all regardless of which photo it was that placed. Now I can kinda relate. For some reason is it disappointing when a favorite photo isn't chosen.

The contest shouldn't be taken seriously, but I am the last person to suggest to anyone to lighten up :o).

As for this thread, it was intended as a way to keep up to date on the latest EFP medals because I'm really too lazy to go looking. I'm not bothered by any direction the discussion takes as long as it's fun.

  In response to Chris,
I kind of like the EFPs, I think they offer a quick "pat on the back" to shooters.
As Chris is probably aware, it took me years, literally, to get a finalist. To say the least it was frustrating not having any clue as to whether my photos were advancing or not.
EFP's give me a better grasp of what works and what doesn't. As it turns out, I've been on the right track from the start, most of my photos moved along and I can go back, take a second look and perhaps make a photo better.

EFP for Oct 1st- DD category

As far as the EFPs, when they first began I thought it was ok, but that was before I knew that getting (or not getting) an EFP was related to whether your image went on to the next round of judging. I really don't care to know that a fav image of mine doesn't stand a chance because it didn't get an EFP. Before I could at least hope that my fav might make it, but now I know it isn't even in the running unless that EFP badge is under it. I can certainly see how the EFP is encouraging, especially to new members and even those w/o any or many finalists. While I didn't mind them to begin with, it changed once I knew how they tied in to the contest. Since I am sure EFPs are here to stay, I wish they would wait until the end of the month (well, around judging time) to have them appear on the images. Then everyone would know if they were on the right track, and people w/o a finalist for the month could at least feel happy to have made the first cut, and even those with finalists could look at their EFP(s) and compare them to their finalist(s) and see if there were ways to improve their EFP(s) so it might make a finalist at a later time. And I do wish they would change them from gold!

First off: 10/1, Travel & Place.

Second off, I feel I have to just say that it really doesn't bother me at all if people say how many EFPs they get.

Third, as I went back and read my post from earlier, I feel it came off a bit more bitter than I meant it to be. I hoped that throwing in the "LOL" would have lightened it up a bit, but in retrospect I feel that wasn't enough. As some of you (Sharon, Chris, Les, Nikki, and others) already know, I have reached a point in my BP existence where I've made peace with the whole contest experience. I used to obsess about finalists, winner, and, more recently, EFPs. However, I know I like what I do...and if the editors like it too, well, that's a bonus. When I watch the EFPs, it's more with an interest than a desperation. When I say that now I have a better selection of resubs, I meant it. I've really grown to like the idea of resubmitting. I've had success with photos that have been passed over three and four times.

In the end, it's all a huge, subjective merry-go-round. I just want to go along for the ride!

And now I have to grab my camera and get outside. The sun is coming up and there is a bit of a fog out there....

Good afternoon all! I just found this thread because I was looking for more info on the EFP's. I read where a member stated that an EFP means your photo has moved onto the first round of the contest. That would imply that if you don't get an EFP that photo will go no further. However, I read a post from Jim Miotke where he said that all EFP's are just a "selection" or "sampling" of photos, judged to have interest, to make it easier for others to view just those (versus combing through all the "new arrivals"). So wouldn't that mean that if a photo didn't get an EFP it could still go on to finalist? Yes, I also check my gallery almost every day and get excited when I get another EFP. BUT, I have one or two on there that I am quite surprised did not get one! And I will be very honest here when I say I have seen some photos awarded EFPs that I was quite "puzzled" over, to be kind, and yet one of my really good ones did not? I am sooooooo confused. I wish someone with BP would clear this up. Does anyone else have any more updated info on this? Has anyone ever had a photo go finalist without it getting and EFP first? Thanks for letting me pluck your brains on this :)~Susan~

Hi Susan, here is what it says under the EFP catagory when you can go through the EFP

Editor's Picks represent uploaded photos that Team BetterPhoto has found especially interesting, eye-catching, or beautiful. They are simply contest entries that have moved on from Round 1 of the contest judging.

Hi Susan... you've heard it all correctly. Initially, BP took the line that it was just a "selection" of images that caught their eye. Later, they clarified that yes, indeed, it is the first round of the contest eliminations. So, no EFP/EP means the photo didn't survive the first round and is in fact out of the running for that month. (That said, we've seen an image get an EP many days after we all assumed that particular day was already "processed" for EP's.)
As with everything in this contest, the huge quantity of entries guarantees that worthy images get passed over every single month... you'll find many of us are big fans of resubmitting an image we truly believe deserves another look. You'll also find (generally) that while a few EP selections make you scratch your head, those usually get weeded out by the time Finalists arrive.

I enjoy gettting EFPs but I can't help but notice that I get far fewer now, than I used to. Consequently, I've resubmitted some former EFPs or personal favorites to different categories to the contest this month. I've only submitted 4 new images and none have been EFPs. It makes me worry a little that the quality of my images may be slipping. Then again, I've noticed the overall quality of all new entries has dramatically improved since when I first joined BetterPhoto.

Here's another thought, does any one else think the Finalist emblems should changed to more noticable color with bolder text? The EFP emblems stand out better and are the same color as winners. Finalist emblems are still dull gray and not very noticable.

Nancy and Christopher, thank you thank you :) I am so relieved that I asked. Now that I know for sure, I can quit scratching my head...lol. Chris I agree with you about the volume and agree that it's worth it to resubmit. I got a finalist once (yea, one of the whole 4 I have lol) by resubmitting (before the EFPs). I think my biggest enjoyment is challenging myself (def: interchangeable with confusing) and when something works well it feels even better to share it with others. I think BP did a great thing by adding the EFPs. I agree with Sam that the medallion stands out a bit more than the finalists. But, they are always improving. Thanks everyone and best of luck :)

There was much discussion in the Forum about the EFP medallion when it first appeared... BP even seemed to indicate a design change was in the works, but I'm not sure if that will still happen.
I think it definitely looks too much like a 2nd, 1st or Grand Prize medallion, to represent what is essentially 7th place (ie, Finalists being the 4th "award tier" you can hope win, behind GP, 1st, 2nd---and there are 3 earlier rounds of eliminations that precede the Finalists; EP is the first, earliest of those rounds.)
It definitely "looks better" than a Finalist medallion, which is a shame, in my opinion. I think it should be redesigned, to not even be an oval medallion at all, but some other graphic element.

I asked BP how the EPs were selected and received the following reply at the end of July:

Thank you for your question. Any images that have not made it past Round 1 of judging in the contest will not receive the Editor's Picks emblem, so this would mean also that if an image entered into the contest does not have this emblem, then it will not be able to win that month's contest, since it did not make it past Round 1. It also follows that the judges who select the Editor's Picks would be the same ones judging the contest category, since the Editor's Picks are generated from this judging of the contest.

I believe that the EPs were an ill-conceived marketing ploy by BP. Displaying them creates a number of problems. The most serious is a feeling of resentment when quality images are rejected and incompetent snapshots are selected. I follow the work of a number of outstanding photographers and am regularly stunned that their work did not make it through the first round. Meanwhile, I too frequently see images that by any reasonable photographic standards do not belong, that leave me "shaking my head" as someone put it.

I predict that if the present system does not change, this resentment will grow and the contest will lose some of its credibility. "You don't want to know how politics and sausage are made," is a well known aphorism. We should add photo contests to that list.

Finally, if nothing changes, I would like to have the option to remove the EP emblems from my gallery. As I said before, I believe they are too prominent and that they create a bias toward the selected images.

34 days later, I just received a EFP for a 9/4/07 entry "1957 Chevy in Florida" image I thought was out of round 1. Does that mean BP is not judging sequentially by date? Could mean that they are taking a second look maybe... but with 40,000 entries, I don't see how.

No, it is not a resubmission, I merely moved it to another category during the same month, but that was maybe 10 days later. If that move is the resulting emblem, it would reflect 24 days before applied EFP.
I have heard several people comment on disappearing emblems. I understand there was a database issue at BP in August. Those claiming loss never saw reinstatement last I knew. Maybe someone's lost emblem ended up on my photo :P What if some are mutants, wandering aimlessly through the database settling on photos at random :)

I lost 3 EFP in July... Never got them back... I also know for sure that MANY of the shots I have were most definitely in the EFP section before the medals, but when the medals were awarded, never got one... That was always a head scratcher for me... I may want to go in and browse, see if I have any new ones....lol

I also wonder if you re-enter an image that already has a EFP badge.. Does it automatically go onto round 2? How would one know since the badge is already there...? I guess we don't...:((

And lastly, I too am a huge fan of the re-design idea... At first, I didn't like them at all... I have warmed up to them... And to take them away now would cause mayhem I am sure...lol But a smaller more suitable recognition would be wonderful....:)

Steve, thanks for passing on that info on the EFP response you got. Although I don't feel the EFPs were an ill conceived marketing ploy, I do agree with your statement regarding images, "I too frequently see images that by any reasonable photographic standards do not belong." That was my head scratching comment earlier.

I think the addition of the EFPs was a good idea and that the concept was to give members more feedback and encouragement. Based on the sheer volume of submissions, I think this is very useful, since only about 2% of all submissions will make it to a finalist. Those finalist medallions were the only feedback we ever got before the EFPs. I believe they provide more encouragement to members. They do for me, perfect or otherwise. I've have wondered, in the case of a flawed image being awarded an EFP, if the EFP was given because that image showed improvement - as judged against the members others images? Of course, that isn't fair, but was the only explanation I could think of.

Does anyone else have any feelings on that or is it just an "imperfect" system?

Susan EFPs were images that caught the eye of who ever was pulling photos for that day, they haven't even been viewed yet by a contest judge.

It has been stated and confirmed that the EFP, or better known in the past as runners up, are picked by the BP STAFF, not the contest judges.

Photos that are bad get through and photos that are good do not. There are 40,000 photos a month now. Good photos will get over looked and bad photos will get into runners up. It's not a perfect system.

I have not found out for sure, but I do think EFPs (aka runners up) are picked from thumbnails. That is the only thing to explain some of the bad and out of focus images that get through. They look ok as thumbnails, but once viewed larger they just don't hold up.

Susan, I know now that they are the first round for the contest, so it makes sense that those EFPs chosen then go to the judges for the next round. The volume each month is amazing. The thumbnail idea certainly could be a valid reason. I'm with Chris, who said resubmitting is a good idea if you feel an image should get a second look.

With that said, my last EFP was for 10/1, flowers that I got sometime on 10/6.

If you read the above note from BP, it says specifically that EPs are chosen by the judge of the category entered.

I think BP still maintains a good bit of silence around the judging process, and perhaps they're even happy to see multiple speculated possibilities as to the overall setup...
I personally don't believe, for instance, and regardless of what was quoted above earlier, that the final-rounds judges are involved in selecting the EP round. But that's just me; my hunch based on what I've seen & heard over the two years I've been participating! ;)

Here is the question I sent to BP, verbatim:

Thanks for your quick response. One thing is still unclear. Does the lack
of an EFP mean an image has been rejected from becoming a finalist?
Further, are the EFPs selected by the judges who are doing the category the
image has been entered in?

The response above is a direct quotation of BP's response. If you don't believe that these statements are accurate, please ask BP the question again and post their response here.

Hi Steve; I'm not doubting your exchange with them, nor am I interested in asking them about it. I understand what you wrote, and what they answered. And I'm fine with all of that, as it may well be 100% perfectly accurate on their part. I choose to believe it is not the whole picture on the judging structure, but then, I don't care whether I'm right or wrong on that; I'm actually not concerned with getting to the bottom of their judging process & structure. I'm happy to enter and wait to see if I have Finalists (or hopefully better, sometimes!) Though, I am rapidly running out of new images---time to get out with the camera!

10/3 Flowers, just got it this afternoon!

I don't want to get worked up about the judging process. I just wonder if anyone has gotten an EFP on an older non-EFP image without doing a fresh upload. The current contest entries show most recently uploaded images first, not the most recently entered. If I re-submitted a non-EFP from June, would it ever get looked at? It seems to me that doing a fresh upload would give it a better chance. Any thoughts, anyone?

Ours is not to reason why...etc. etc. etc. LOL!!

No one is going to figure out this contest with or without the help of BP staff. Believe me, I've tried. I've spent HOURS trying to figure it out. In the end some will win like they are the only ones with a camera while others who are better won't even get a finalist. How the heck are ya going to figure out something like that??? :D

Final thoughts on this: I just wanted to know the basic process so that I can make decisions to resubmit or perhaps rework a photo. Now I feel like I know the flow, in general terms, which is fine. Thank you Chris and Steve. And Chris, I'm right there with you...I gotta get some new stuff!!!

Sam, so far I haven't gotten an EFP other than in the order I've submitted photos. If it happens, I'll it post here. But yesterday I did get an EFP for a 10/4 submit and then someone right after me got one for a 10/2 submit, both in flowers. I'm going to try a few resubmits on Sep submits that didn't get an EFP.

Hi Sam, you really got me wondering on if the re-submit even get looked at, so I just looked throough 51 pages of DDR to make sure my re-submit was there, It was.
When you re-submit, they won't go to the recent entry page because it is already in the pool, but they will go to the catagory you put it in once entered!
I had moved mine from a monthly theme entry to DDR.
Whewwwwww!!!

Have a GREAT DAY EVERYONE!

  Sam--

Just to answer your question with a bit of personal experience: I can tell you unequivocally that, yes, older non-efp photos do have a chance when resubmitted without doing a fresh upload. I know this because I had an old image from last year which I entered three separate times and never got an EFP. Then, two months ago, I entered it for the FOURTH time and not only did it garner an EFP but it also went on to win second place...all without ever doing a fresh upload.

So I am a firm believer in my mantra "resubmit, resubmit, resubmit." I hope that helps!

Just to put this worry to bed (again!) ;)
Besides John's great Chicago image example, Janine R. scored the Grand Prize just 2 or 3 months ago---and used an image she'd previously uploaded (which went nowhere in her first contest attempt). She resubmitted it from her gallery (without a fresh upload) when it went on to win Grand.

I've done resumbmits from old entries and they got EFP and even on to finalist. So you don't need to upload new.

Lately I've been uploading new so I'd know if it made runners up or not. Since the old entry already had EFP it was the only way to know.

Problem is these new uploads aren't even getting EFP even though the old ones did. So same photo, different month, and no EFP this time around even though it got one last time.

There's nothing stopping you from resubmitting it now... However, I'd say wait---if the Sept. entry has an EP, wait for the Sept. results before repeating it as an Oct. entry. (That way, if it goes Finalist, you've not "wasted" a resub entry in Oct.)
If it has no EP from Sept., then you're probably ok resubbing it right now.

The group will not have open membership so if you want in please provide your gallery link for me so I can avoid opening the door to BP members that really have no interest in the EFP discussion.

Here's the link.

Don't forget to include a link to your gallery when you join the group. I will make attempt to find galleries if you don't provide me with the link, but if I can't find it I'll have to email prospective members for their links before admitting them. Obviously no one will be admitted to the group that does not have a BP gallery of some kind. If you don't have a gallery a website will work as well. Thanks!

Hi Gang - My first post on this thread! My last EFP was Oct 1! It seems that I am recieving fewer EFP's then the last few months... so be it, not complaining or bitter. I have resubmitted EFP's from last year (last couple of months) and all but one got selected! The one I got a big chuckle from was a resub with an old EFP... Nothing... However this picture was published this year in an National Pro Photographer's Magazine?!?! All subjecive and a lot of suspense and fun!!! Best Wishes and Good Look to all, Glenn.

Ken, personally I don't like the way the clubs are laid out. In a Yahoo group you get emails when messages are posted or you can check the site and see the messages all lined up nicely in a row. The clubs are probably something I would just need to get used to but being old and cranky I simply don't like change and I'm comfortable with Yahoo groups :o).

Glenn, it looks like we're all receiving fewer EFPs, and we've all been wondering why. It's one of the many EFP mysteries! LOL :D

My question--you said you resubbed EFPs from last year and all but one got selected. Does that mean they were old EFPs that went on to finalist when you resubmitted them? Or, they were fresh uploads and got EFPs again on the new upload?

Also, which one got published? I'd like to see it, if I haven't already. That's so funny it didn't go anywhere on BP--of course, getting published in the natl photo magazine is a much bigger honor. Congratulations!! :D

Does everyone seem to be getting fewer EFPs this month like last month? Or do you feel the EFPs are picking up again? I know some people seemed to think last month that there were less EFPs because BP was getting ready for the Summit. So those of you posting here now, does it seem like you are getting as many as you did in the previous months before Sept. or about the same as last month? It seems to me that the EFPs have picked up a bit, but it's hard to say.

Hi Carol... I dunno about more vs. fewer EPs... I did pretty well in September, tied with my personal best for # of EPs in a month. But Oct. is off to a dreadful start for me. However, I've run out of new material, I've missed a few days entering, and I've had some resubs---so it is not a good month to compare easily to September, which included 27 brand-new images for me (most of which I felt were better overall, than my Oct. entries thus far!)

Hi Jill, there's been much discussion on how the EFPs work in this thread so you may want to review back. The answer to your question is yes, all finalists would have been EFPs first. BP announced that EFPs are those photos chosen in the first round of judging, therefore, if a photo does not have an EFP, then it has been "eliminated" for that month. With that said, others have reported getting EFPs on photos many days beyond what seems to be the typical number of days it takes to be reviewed. Others still have reported resubmitting a photo that didn't get an EFP one month, only to have that photo go on to a win in a different month.

Hope that helps!

Chris, I feel your pain although I'm not happy with many of my September submits, October is crapping out for me. I too, need to get out and get new stuff.

Here's a good example: Just got an EFP last night for a 10/10 M&D (*SunKissed*) that I submitted last month and it didn't get one. Persistence! Or being stubborn (IMHO I felt that photo at least deserved an EFP so I resubmitted).
