Photography Question

Jodi M. Walsh

starting a business

I've been wanting to start doing some portrait photography but I don't know if I really have what it takes. I love taking pictures and will continue doing that no matter what but I don't want to be pestering people (meaning friends family) to take their pictures if they're really not interested. Is there a balance to it all or do you just keep shooting and wait for other people to show interest?

I recently started a little business myself! I actually specialize in Landscapes and Nature. I have loads of photos from the past few years and have decided to start putting them to good use. Now that I am getting all legit, friends are asking me to do photos. I am of course saying yes, though I prefer to not do portraits, etc. I usually shoot people for fun.

Anyways, back on subject! I think you'll find that by asking a few that you know to take some pictures for them, for free of course, and giving them a disc with your talent, you may find they ask you next time they need someone. Or the next time they are being told a horror story about going to a Studio, they are probably more apt to suggest you! Take some pics for fun of people and set up a portfolio (online or in a book) and have it ready for people to browse! Word of mouth is key. And recommendations are WAY better then the Yellow Pages any day!!

If you are doing what you love, your talent will shine through!

As far as the pestering, spend a week or so letting EVERYONE you know how excited you are about your new venture. Then after you have some fabulous shots, show them off!!

You can do anything you have your heart in!! Good luck!!

Heather

Thank you so much for such an encouraging response. This is definitely something I've loved doing for quite sometime and after suffering through a horrible studio experience, I feel no mother should have to stress about having pictures taken of their kids.

I wish you lots of luck in your photography work. thank you again

  Jodi,
I would just ley Friends & Family know how you dream of succeding in this venture.
Usually, it dosen't take long before your friends & Family will be sharing word of mouth advertizing for you to those they know.
The schools are also a great place to jump in to.
offer to shoot a few games at the schools, or donante your time in a charity auction, ect.
all these will help you to get the word out in your commuinity.
The best of luck in your ventures,
Debby
