Hi Dan, you may need to provide a little more info, like what budget you've got. Tripod legs and heads can quickly add up to a lot of money; ultimately, you just need to ensure you've got a good, stable set of legs, and a head that is rated to hold the weight of your combined gear without slipping its grip... I have an Induro carbon-legged tripod & ball head, and use an SLR + 100mm macro lens (no ring flash, however) and have not had any problems with it.

Thanks Chris, My budget is up to about $450 +- I have been looking at the new Monfrotto with the tilting column in the middle. It looks pretty versitile. Don't you have trouble fine adjustng with a ball head? I thought a tilt and pan might be good. But the rack type heads look the best?

I ended up with a used Gitzo 1575M Offset Ball Head. The current model is a 1576M. I love the fact that I can get this ballhead in almost any position. I had tried a Macro Adjusting Rail at one point and found I could make the adjustments I needed with just the ballhead. I don't think there is a position I couldn't get the thing in. For the legs I ended up witha Manfrotto 458B. The legs are great because of the quick release that allows them to also be adjusted on an individual basis and quickly. My only regret is the combination of the 2 is about 10 lbs which doesn't sound like much, but at the end of the day feels like 100.

Good luck!!
