Uploaded Image Looks Pixilated

I've never had this particular issue before -- my recently uploaded image looks pixilated and quite awful (!!!) in its smaller view in the contest and in my gallery, but looks fine once its opened and enlarged. Does anyone have any ideas about why this would happen?

Cindy, could it be that you saved it in 16-bit, forgetting to bring it down to 8-bit? That's what happened to one of mine, and before I could take it down, someone posted they loved the special effects!

Hi Kay - Well, it just goes to show you... Actually, no, it turns out its a result of the way BP handles its photos. My photoshop guru and neighbor (and BP member) Steve Ray, explained it this way:

BP’ system merely shrinks, but does not optimize the image in the thumbnails. Meaning the large images are reduced by their software causing the pixels to collide. Therefore whenever there is ANY lines on an angle like slats in a fence, or the boards on these chairs, it will result in a printers effect called moire’. Nothing you can do about it, it’s not your picture’s quality, it’s BP’s method of handling the photos.

Steve
