Monopods rule of thumb

Hello ... I was wondering if anyone knows the rule of thumb for monopods ie) shooting handheld is approx 1/length of lens used so what would it be for using the monopod ... Or how many stops of "image stabilization" will you get using a monopod ?

Erin, I do not know of any rule and am not sure a useful one could be developed. There are simply too many variables in the types of monopods, the manner of use, etc. But you do get a substantial stability advantage particularly when using long lenses. If this helps, I shoot equestrian events at 400 mm and can get by with a 1/60s shutter speed without camera shake.
