photoshop vs GIMP My free trial of photoshop has ended...I have a decision to make...should I buy photoshop (not really in our budget at this point...:( or should I use gimp - I was told it is pretty good. in all my quick glances at photo softwares - I do not see my favorites: 'burn" and "dodge' tools and the "healing brush" and "spot healer" that I have come to love in photoshop. i would love to know if anyone is using gimp - what you like, what you don't - is it as good as photoshop?

Yes, GIMP does lack some features of Photoshop, but if it works out for you, that's fine. I user a program called Helicon Filter (for Windows only) which is far less expensive than Photoshop (and has a free version). It has a different layout from Photoshop and GIMP, and I find it easier to use. It is basically designed to separate different types of image editing (retouching, exposure, noise/sharpness, etc.) into separate tabs in the program. It should be able to do all the image corrections you need, and it has brushes similar to the burn, dodge, healing brush, and spot healer. Helicon Filter doesn't, however, support layers. (But GIMP does.) I think this might come about in future versions of the program, and you could buy the unlimited license to get those upgrades later for free if you want. Check it out, it has the full version in a 30 day trial before reverting into the free version (which lacks a few features): Info: Download:

Serif PhotoPlus 6.0 is also a free program that you can download. It has basic adjustment tools and a few filters. You can also work with layers. It is great to start out. I eventually upgraded to Photoshop.
