Advice on Tripod & head

Hi - I am wanting to replace my cheapo tripod with something that is a bit more substantial, and that is easy to set up. One I saw that I liked was by Manfroto neotec 458B -- the legs pull out so simply, looks easy to adjust, looked good for changing around quickly. I also was looking at the manfroto grip action tripod "head", model # 322RC2. Is anyone familiar with these? Do you like them? The best prices I could find were $356 for the legs, $119 for the head. It feels like an awful lot to spend, so I need some feedback if others use these and are happy, or if you have any recommendations for any that are in a similar price range or less.

Thanks for your input!

  Hello Susannah,
Many ppl here probably use that set up & will comment. I suggest a great company called Really Right Stuff. They carry this brand along with gitzo & their own ball heads. My experiance with them is they will give you the best advice. I bought gitzo legs and a really right stuff ball head. It was a bit pricey, but is carbon fiber, lightweight, and very fast & easy to use. It's a good place to start to price out and check other brand prices. Of course I felt it was alot of money to spend also, but I feel I will have it a lifetiime and for me was well worth it. I really am happy with my set up. check them out. www.reallyrightstuff.com
I always say you get what you pay for.

  Hi Susannah,
I was just recommending the Manfrotto 486 head and 3021 legs to a student. Not the fanciest gear from Manfrotto, but good. I use an earlier version of this tripod head, been very happy with it.
Thanks, John Siskin

I got the 458B used on Ebay about 8 months back. If you are willing to wait and watch you can find some good deals. I love my 458B. The legs definitely pull out easy and quickly which is great. They also go back into place just as easy by pushing in the release buttons at one time and 'pushing' the tripod down. I am not familiar with the particular head you are looking at. I ended up with an Offset ball head by Gitzo. (1576M) I like because I quickly put the head in any position possible just as quickly as adjusting the legs on the tripod. Just make sure that the head is capable of supporting your lens and camera combination. The first head I had could not support the weight combination. THe only drawback is the weight combination of the legs and head is about 8 lbs. Doesn't sound like alot until the end of the day lugging it around. I like the tripod so much that I am looking at the Neotec monopod as a supplement.

Good luck!!
