Any of the lower priced versions of the Nikon or Canon, with Pentax or Sony thrown in for consideration.
Canon and Nikon are so widely used that their availability makes it kind of a better long term thing over other brands. Every camera store has them, all the third party lens makers make mounts for them.
Look online at Adorama, or B&H, or Calumet for prices.
Consider models that are still good ones to have but have a price reduction due to a replacement model coming out.

If I wanted to buy my son a camera that worked well, had all of the latest features, yet supported lenses from the Golden Era of the SLR (1960s thru 1980s), I'd strongly consider a Pentax, and specifically the K100D Super. It comes with an 18-55 zoom, which is a good all-around lens, and the numbers of truly fantastic K-mount and M42 mount lenses on eBay that will work on the camera, and that sell for a fraction of their worth, is astounding.

Even better, you can buy him a used K1000 35mm film camera and the same lenses will work on it also.

I'm not a big believer of the "no one ever made a mistake by buying Canon or Nikon" philosophy. I like the brands, but the other brands also have a lot to offer.

BTW, what model does your son want? If he's really into photography, I'm sure he's read all of the magazines and has decided on his dream camera, or at least his favorite brand. Why not let him have some input into the decision?

aileen cockburn   Thanks guys.
i will look at the cameras you have suggested. I will try to get an idea of what camera he would like without asking as I want it to be a surprise for his christmas.
thanks again
