Pop Up Fash Problem

My pop flash on my Canon Rebel XTI does not spring up anymore. In fact it feels tight when I move it up and down. It unlocks fine along with locking in the down position, but won't come up on it's own without help. Any ideas as to how to rectify this problem?

  Have you changed shooting modes?

The flash will pop up automatically in some auto modes, but not others. It won't pop up automatically in P mode or any of the Creative Zone Modes (Av, Tv, M).

Or is the problem that the flash starts to pop up, but gets stuck on the way? The mechanism might have dirt or dust in it. With the flash popped up, try cleaning under and around it with a blower brush and a Q-tip moistened with rubbing alcohol.

Yeah, it was getting stuck when it was on the way. You could hear it release, but would not come up. Camera would attempt three times and would then tell me "Error...please turn off power" and something else. Anyway....after opening it maunaully...I did clean the dust out and operated it up and down continually for about a minute.....it got it's spring action back. Now works great! Is their a lube of some sort I can apply that won't harm camera or collect dust?
