I've read that the slave sensors on some strobes are sensitive to infrared light as well as the visible light of other flashes.

Do you have anything in the room that might be emitting infrared light, like maybe the motion sensor for a security alarm?

  Brenda,
what kind of lighting?
and are you using a sync cord or wireless trigger?
this will really help.

Chris & Debby, thanks for responding. I am using Britel lighting.2-200w w/umbrellas and 1-150w back light ,with a sync cord, my flash is a Canon 420 EX speed light , do I just leave the flash off the camera when I'm using them?or do I set it to the slave mode? Debby I forget the camera modes you said to start out with also. but I have the lighting set up in the "clock " way you advised. p.s. Chris the only security alarm I have is a big mean cat, and she does bite like a dog, but I do have 2 large windows and the doorway into the studio. will sun light and others light set them off?

Sunlight doesn't set of the slave. Your sync cord is probably short circuit the lights. Or the pc socket is malfunctioning.
To deduce what's going on, attach the sync cord to the other strobes to see if you get the same result.

take / leave your flash off your cam too, it might be causing the flashes to false trigger.

There could be something in the auto focus assist that is doing it.

Yes, you do need to take your flash off the camera. The 420EX only operates in E-TTL mode, which means that it emits a pre-flash (for metering) before the main flash. This could definitely be throwing off your strobes.

Setting the 420EX to slave mode is not the answer, because that slave mode will only be triggered by another Canon flash or trigger, it won't trigger optically.

ok this is what I found that works,my strobes are only plugged into the wall and turned on slave, no sync cord and works with my on camera flash. everything fires perfect, and no more lighting flaws like harsh shadows in/on the background.and the colors are great.Ihad to play a little with camera settings but now its working, I do believe Gregory that it was the sync cord adapter.thanks to ALL of you for your help.Chris thanks for telling me about my 420EX I didnt realize it would mess with them too.

  Brenda,
200/f22 should always be a good starting place.
Then you can adjust if needed.
I hope this helps,
You are also welcome to call me or email me a # and I'll call you.
Sorry this is so late, just got home from LA Studio.
Debby
