Photography Question

How to shoot sunset with a spherical shape

Every time I shoot a sunset, the sun and the area around the sun is washed out and I cannot have the sun in a normal spherical shape. Do I need a specific filter to shoot the sunset without the sun washed out? If I want some details in the foregroud also, is there any way to get both the round sun and and the foreground?

The sun is too much brighter than the rest of your composition. Decrease exposure to get a good image of the sun, then your foreground goes too dark. The solution is (a) Take 2 or more shots, exposing one for the sun, one for the foreground, maybe a third for the sunset cloudes, and combine them in a digital editing program. or (b) use a split or graduated neutral density filter that cuts the light from the upper portion of the scene (the sun) so that the exposure is better matched to the foreground..

Jon, thank you very much for your reply. I find it very helpful. The first method you suggested definitely requires a tripod. That's no problem as long as the location condition allows. Combining multiple layers with different exposures might be a little complicated for me since I still don't know about HDR. In the meantime, the second method sounds much simpler and doesn't requrie much of DDR process.

I'll explore both methods. Again, thank you for your advise Jon!! I'll really appreciate it!!

if the conditions are right, and a little more expierence, post work is not necessary.
all scenic shots are better with a tripod and remote release.

That's true, if a shot is done properly, post production is not so much necessary. I'm using a tripod for my sunset and night shots. Thank you for your feedback, Sam!!
