Trouble with af on my D200

I was just wondering if anyone who has a nikon D200 has had any problems with their auto focus, in a dimly lit area?

Occasionally (not all of the time), when I try to focus on something, like a person or large object, in a lower light situation (not dark or even really dim), the focus just goes in and out, in and out and then when it finally stops nothing is in focus. It just will not focus on anything.

Is this normal? I could understand if the room was dark, or the light was really low, but to me it doesn't look like the room is dark enough to cause problems. I'm trying to decide whether I should take it to get looked at or if this is normal for the D200.

Thanks for any help!

COllette, my D200 occassionally has trouble focusing when it's in a dimly lit situation, but this has to do with the apparent contrast.

The auto-focus mechanism depends on sensing contrast and edges - the lower the light, the less contrasty the subject, or the slower the taking lens - the harder time it has. This is normal.

Thing is, since our eyes are such a complex vision system, we take for granted the ability to see in a wide spectrum of lighting situations. A camera doesn't have all that "wetware"; it only senses photons or the lack thereof. So sometimes what seems just a bit dark to your eye might be just a bit TOO dark for the auto-focus to work.

I think the D200 AF mechanism is one of the best out there, actually - but if you're using a slower lens or, again, have a low contrast scene, it might just not be enough for it to work.
