Canon IS lens or L series lens

I am pretty new to photography and recently bought a Canon Rebel Xti. I love the camera and am very eager but I want to buy a new lens and am not sure which way to go. For background, I use my camera mostly for pictures of the family, some nature shots and some misc pictures. I am debating between two lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM or Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Similar in price and I am aware of the differences with the image stabilization versus the quality of the L series. I just don't know which is better for me. Any feedback would be appreciated!!

Just considering those two, I'd get the 70-200.

  Hi Gina,
First off, I would definitely get a lens with an image stabilizer. You'll find that it helps a lot, even on a tripod (note: some older IS, like on the 100-400, don't function properly on a tripod and add shake).

Since you're first starting off, you really don't need to focus on having the best, sharpest lenses you can buy (similar to how if you're starting, you don't need to buy a 1Ds). I wouldn't buy a junk lens, but the 70-300 will give you pretty good-quality images with a wider range. Having that extra range will let you explore composition more (did I mention that I teach composition and love having a range of lenses to choose from? :P ), which is what you really need right now. Once you find what you like to shoot/what lens range you want to focus on, or once you feel like you're being limited by your equipment's quality, then consider buying a better lens (like the 70-200 f/4L IS lens). But save the money until then. Just to give you an idea, when I was first starting, I had the older 75-300 IS lens, and I shot with it for about 5 years. I even sold a number of images taken with it :)

Also, because of the smaller sensor on the Rebel, the 70-300 is roughly a 110-480mm 35mm equivalent lens, which is really great for sports, nature, and even landscape!

the 70-300mm IS USM lens is incredible.

I highly recommend it.

Many consider its image quality to be comparable to "L" glass.

Heres a couple I've shot with mine:
