Photography Question

purchasing a digital camera

hi.

i am looking into buying my first professional digital camera. I was looking at the D40's and then realized that my N80 lens were not compatible with the D40 (right? that's what i've been told) Now I am looking at a D50 but they are either too hard to find, used, or too expensive. can you tell me the big difference between a D40 and a D50 and why D50's are so hard to find? there is not an abudance like there are of D40's.
What do you suggest I do. the D70s are a little pricey for me, even used. I need someones professional and knowledgable opinion before I purchse one!

thanks

  Hi Andrea,
My camera of choice is the D70s,as noted earlier.
If you can find out when the new models will be coming out you may be able to find a D70s or one of the D40 series cameras on sale at a discount. The D50 the same way.The D40 is a smaller camera size wise, and lighter.
I would sugeest visiting www.kenrockwell.com and www.nikonusa.com for more information on the features of these cameras,or visiting your local camera shop.

WHile I shoot with a Canon 30D, I don't think the Nikon D40, D40X or D50 is considered a professional camera. And, perhaps, neither is the D70S.

You might wan to consider the D200 or wait for Nikon's next camera that will complete with the Canon 1D Mark III and 1DS Mark III.

yeah, I know the higher priced ones are more professional, but for my first digital, I don't want to spend too much! so in that sense, would you recommend the D50 or D70? I want to stick with Nikon since I have two other film cameras and lens that are interchangable that are Nikon.

thanks

When others have asked me what kind of camera to buy, I always ask them, "What kind kind of pictures are planning to produce?" If you're going to send them to friends and relatives via e-mail, you don't need to much camera [i.e chip size.] If you're planning to frame images and hang them on a wall in your home, a gallery or, maybe, try to sell them, you need more camera.

The myth of megapixels has been exposed. No one NEEDS more than 6 MP; manufacturers, generally, are settling on +/- 10 MP, notwithstanding Canon's new 1DS Mark III with a 21 MP chip.

Everything I've read about the Nikon D40/40X is positive, except that you're not necessarily able to use your old Nikon lenses [at least with the D40.] And, they're billed as an entry level cameras, not just an entry level digital SLR.

The D70, reportedly, was replaced by the D70S because it was just too hard to use. A friend of mine has one and, after three years use, is still uncomfortable with it - and he has both the Nikon F4 and F4A, so he's no illiterate.

Another possible choice is the D80. It, too, has been well reviewed.

I'd go for the D200 first, stretching for the price [since you said professional camera,] and the D80 before the D70S. I'd stay away from the D40/40X [the lens issue.

is the D50 about the same as the D40? I didn't know if there was much difference or not. I mostly shoot weddings and senior portraits outdoors. I don't have my own studio yet. so, if I would say the D40, D50, D70 and D80...you would say go with the D80? I just can't afford the more expensive cameras right now. thanks for replying! I will take all that you said into consideration. its nice to talk to people who know what they're talking about. I definatly don't want the D70 if its too complicated to use.

thanks

  Andrea,

You really have to go with what is comfortable for YOU. I have a D50 and I love it, I believe that they are nowdiscontinued because of the D40. I have read great reviews on the D40. You really need to check out www.kenrockwell.com. His website is full of Nikon reviews. He is a pro shooter in California and loves his D40. Check it out, it will answer lots of questions for you. Hope this helps.

  hey anna-

thanks for responding. I definatly would go with the D40, but I read that my AF-G Nikkor lens doesn't support the auto-focus on the D40 (right?). have you ever used the D70s?

  Andrea,
No I haven't used the D70s. I looked at them when I was buying but they were out of my price range, plus, it was quite a bit heavier than the D50. I don't know about you but that makes a difference for me. You really should check out that website I gave you earlier, it is so packed full of easy to read and understand info. Let me know if I can answer any more of your questions.
Anna
